NCIS is about to hit a milestone that few shows ever get to: 1000 episodes. That's twenty plus years of solving cases and entertaining fans, so of course the writers and producers are going to make sure that the episode that commemorates it all is special.

NCIS will include hidden references in episode 1000

Algún Día
“Algún Día” – The NCIS team must help Torres when he puts his future at stake by confronting the man who tormented his family when he was a child, on the 21st season premiere of the CBS Original series NCIS, Thursday, Feb. 12 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)*. There hasn't been many details regarding the plot yet, but showrunners David North and Steven D. Binder did talk to TV Line about the what fans can expect on a micro-level. In other words, keep an eye out for tons of hidden references. Binder promised it will be worth it:

"We're hoping to put some Easter eggs for longtime fans of the show… If you’re watching it in 4K, you might have to blow some things things up, but they’re going to be there."

NCIS has always done a good job of weaving in the past, and the past has become even more of a relevant topic in the wake of NCIS: Origins announcement. The spinoff will focus on Leroy Jethro Gibbs during his first couple years as part of the NCIS team, meaning fans will get to see even more of their favorite organization come to life.

NCIS will also bring back old characters

A Family Matter
“A Family Matter” – Special Agent Alden Parker (Gary Cole) is still on the run with his ex-wife Vivian (Teri Polo), so the team investigates who from his past might have a personal vendetta against him in hopes of clearing Parker’s name. Enlisting the help of NCIS: Hawai’i’s Special Agent Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) and Computer Specialist Ernie Malick (Jason Antoon), who are in town meeting with Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) in preparation for a global military exercise, the group /

The incorporation of Easter eggs will go hand-in-hand with cameos from past cast members like Tobias Fornell (Joe Spano), who's involvement was confirmed via social media. While it remains to be seen whether we will see returns from other veterans, the fact that Fornell is involved means that the showrunners are definitely looking to delight fans with nostalgic flourishes.

We are dubious that Mark Harmon will return to play Gibbs, but that doesn't mean that there can't be a mention of his character, or perhaps even a message from him as he continues to enjoy the quiet life.

Regardless of what goes down, North confirmed that the 1000th episode will be tailor made to the fans who have been around since day one:

"We’re going to pay plenty of homage to the past."

The only downside is that fans have to wait until April 15 to watch the episode!
