NCIS: Hawai'i reveals synopsis for season 3 (and series?) finale

The procedural drama is reaching crunch time on CBS.

CBS has released the synopsis for the NCIS: Hawai'i season 3 finale. It's customary to do so, as we're getting further into the season and the network wants to drum up hype for what's next. There's a bit of a problem, though: NCIS: Hawai'i has not yet been renewed for another season.

The procedural spinoff is in the very tricky position of completing its third season without knowing whether it will be the end of the line or the set up for additional seasons. This effectively means that the season 3 finale has to serve as both a capper to the season, and the series as a whole (just in case).

NCIS: Hawai'i is still awaiting renewal

Dies Irae
“Dies Irae” – When a figure from Tennant’s CIA past reemerges, the NCIS team seeks help from the most unlikely place in order to catch a killer who threatens to destroy everything Tennant has built, on the conclusion to the two-part second season finale of the CBS Original series NCIS: HAWAI’I, Monday, May 22 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*. The synopsis for the season 3 (possibly series) finale reads as follows:

"Following a devastating ambush with a deadly bioweapon, the NCIS team must track down a mysterious terrorist group before they can strike again."

It's a great premise for an episode, and just the sort of threat that could result in one of the main characters falling into a deadly situation. A cliffhanger in which the fate of one of the team members is uncertain usually works, but the show can't really afford to do such a thing at the moment.

Yahoo theorized that budget cuts would be applied to NCIS: Hawai'i if it does get renewed, which makes sense given that it fails to draw the viewership of its flagship show. There may even be a few instances in which main cast members are given reduced screen time. The concept was floated last year with regards to the One Chicago shows, but thankfully it didn't come to fruition.

Jason Antoon is hopeful the show will come back

Stolen Valor
“Stolen Valor” –Tennant and the NCIS team suspect foul play when they investigate a fatal car crash involving a Navy officer who turns out to be an imposter. Also, Whistler finds herself in danger when she goes undercover to learn the truth behind the accident, on the CBS Original series NCIS: HAWAI’I, Monday, Oct. 3 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+. There's still reason to be optimistic, however. CBS has already canceled other shows, so the fact that they haven't pulled the plug on NCIS: Hawai'i means there's still a chance. Series star Jason Antoon weighed in on what could happen if the show comes up back, and he told Us Weekly that he'd love to see a wedding between Lucy and Kate. He even thinks his character should officiate it:

"[Ernie] secretly probably wants them to get married and wants to marry them. Not that the writers ever said that, but that’s my prediction."

We share Antoon's enthusiasm, and remain hopeful that we will get to see some version of the NCIS: Hawai'i team moving forward.
