NCIS plans spinoffs but one of its main shows isn't renewed (yet)

We're getting dangerously close to the end of the season...
“A Family Matter” – Following the cliffhanger Season 19 finale, with Parker (Gary Cole) still on the run with his ex-wife Vivian (Terri Polo), the team investigates who from his past might have a personal vendetta against him in hopes of clearing Parker’s name. Enlisting the help of NCIS: Hawai’i’s Special Agent Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) and Computer Specialist Ernie Malick (Jason Antoon), who are in town meeting with Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) in preparation for a global military

NCIS is doing well these days. Well, that might be putting it mildly. The juggernaut franchise is hitting the 1,000 episode mark, and has announced plans to roll out an impressive (and ambitious) slate of prequel and spinoff shows. There's even an international sect of the franchise with the successful first season of NCIS: Sydney.

The unadulterated success of NCIS over the last year is what makes the situation involving NCIS: Hawai'i so interesting. The show is currently in the midst of its third season, and has been a steady draw for fans. The show even received a boost of interest when former NCIS: Los Angeles star LL Cool J made the jump from cameo to recurring cast member.

NCIS: Hawai'i is still waiting on renewal

Blind Curves
“Blind Curves” – The NCIS team’s investigation takes them deep into the world of illegal street racing after a Marine staff sergeant’s body is discovered in a junkyard. Also, Tennant is concerned Alex is hiding something from her, and Whistler is anxious about introducing Lucy to her co-workers, on the CBS Original series NCIS: HAWAI’I, Monday, Sept. 26 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+.* Pictured: Noah Mills as Jesse /

Despite these virtues, NCIS: Hawai'i has yet to be renewed for a fourth season by CBS. The show is one of only a handful of dramas that weren't immediately renewed with the rest of their franchise. It's common practice for networks to give the green light to franchises in bulk. One Chicago, for example, had all three of its shows renewed by NBC on the same day.

Part of the delay with NCIS: Hawai'i may stem from a lack of space. TV Line recently ran a piece on all the shows the network has slated for the upcoming season, and noted that there might not even be enough time slots to accommodate all of them.

NCIS was recently renewed for season 22

Strange Invaders
“Strange Invaders” – After discovering a navy pilot’s body riddled with unusual wounds, NCIS’ investigation draws the team into the rabbit hole of UFO conspiracy theories, on the CBS Original series NCIS, Monday, April 1 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on-demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on-demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)*. So far, NCIS: Hawai'i and CSI: Vegas are the prime examples of spinoffs that CBS has yet to bring back. NBC has a similar situation going on with Law & Order: Organized Crime, which was the only Law & Order show to not get picked up for the 2024-25 season (yet).

While it may be easy to jump to the conclusion that these shows are more expendable than their franchise peers, there are other variables to take into consideration, like production costs and the aforementioned time slots. We maintain hope that NCIS: Hawai'i will get its renewal, but for the time being, we'll enjoy the show and its mini-crossovers with the rest of the franchise.
