NCIS renewed for season 22 ahead of landmark 1,000th episode
NCIS is finally renewed. It may seem strange that such an institution of procedural TV took so long to get a renewal notice from its network, but such have been the oddities that have surfaced in the wake of the Hollywood strikes. Very few shows have been given an early green light, and ones that seem like no-brainers (NCIS being one of them) have had to wait until deep into their current season runs.
We're not surprised so much as relieved that CBS finally decided to pull the trigger and bring NCIS back to fans for a 22nd season. The network issued a glowing statement regarding the renewal, as they named NCIS and The Neighborhood "cornerstones" of their programming and absolute staples in their respective genres.
NCIS will be back for the 2024-25 season
The statement was penned by CBS President of Entertainment, Amy Reisenbach, who also wrote:
"The Neighborhood and NCIS are the very best definition of a CBS comedy and drama. They embody authentic storytelling with heart, humor, and family dynamics. We are proud to bring them back next season."
NCIS has only been renewed for a single season, which has been customary practice for networks still recovering from the aforementioned strikes. The One Chicago and Law & Order franchises have also been subject to single season renewals, whereas they had been handed multi-season deals in years prior. In fact, the only procedural show to recieved a three-year extension was FBI.
While the NCIS renewal did arrive later than expected, it ultimately worked out perfectly. The news that the show is coming back for another season broke mere days the landmark 1,000th episode is set to air, so fans have multiple reasons to celebrate at the moment.
It's the only NCIS show to be renewed so far
The longevity of the show is not to be overlooked, and its something star Wilmer Valderrama praised during a recent appearance on CBS Mornings:
"It's crazy to be at the tail end of that. You got to kind of pay tribute to the original cast who started this thing. A thousand episodes later, and it's not slowing down."
He's not wrong. NCIS is arguably stronger than ever thanks to an upcoming slate of spinoffs and prequels that will expand upon the characters we first met on the flagship series. It's a good time to be a fan.
