NCIS has really been spreading its wings during the off-season. The franchise has started production on two highly-anticipated spinoffs, NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Tony and Ziva. The hype around these has been so significant that it's drowned out some of the attention for the flagship show.

Fortunately, NCIS has also kicked off production on its upcoming season. The beloved procedural began filming earlier this week, and one of its veteran stars, Brian Dietzen, commemorated the day by posting a fun update on Instagram.

Brian Dietzen celebrated the show's return on social media

The actor, who plays Dr. Jimmy Palmer, posted a photo of his iconic glasses with the caption: "These are going on my face now. Hello Jimmy Palmer. Welcome back everyone!" Brian Dietzen doesn't wear glasses in real life, but his character is inextricably tied to his round frames.

Palmer had to contend with a lot in the season 21 finale. Jessica Knight (Katrina Law), decided to take a position as Chief REACT Training Officer at Camp Pendleton. This means she will be moving away from Washington, D.C., and by extension, her boyfriend Palmer. It was a difficult decision for her, but Palmer gave her full support, telling her it would be for the best.

Season 22 will undoubtedly deal with the emotional fallout of this move, and how Dr. Palmer is feeling about no longer being near his romantic partner. By no means, however, does it mark the end of their romance.

Dietzen's character has a lot going on in season 22

During a May interview with Us Weekly, Brian Dietzen explained how the writers have crafted and paced the romance between Palmer and Knight. He commended the patience that they have shown, and noted that it makes the whole endeavor more rewarding for the viewer.

"[It's about] two people who actually talk about what they’re feeling," he told the outlet. "[Instead of people who] make eyes at each other from across the room for eight years until one gets on a plane and they kiss."

Hopefully these two wind up together, when all is said and done.
