No, Colin Donnell will not be returning for Chicago Med season 9

Despite some behind-the-scenes photos, Donnell is not back.

It may seem like an eternity ago, but there was a time when Connor Rhodes was one of the most important characters on Chicago Med. He spearheaded some of the show's most important arcs, and his romances made up a lot of the relationship drama during Med's early seasons.

The show has gone through a lot of cast changes in the last couple years, and said goodbye to a handful of core characters, but a recent social media post had fans theorizing that the show may consider reviving two of their most beloved characters: Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) and Rhodes.

Colin Donnell recently visited the Med set

Tee and the actor who played Rhodes, Colin Donnell, posed for a photo on the set of Chicago Med, and the caption, written by Tee, read as follows:

"So I'm directing my Ep of #ChicagoMed and guess who made a surprise visit... the @colindonnell Great to see you old friend. The #OG Docs"

It was great to see two of the show's original cast members link up, but the fact that it was literally on the set of an upcoming Med episode led to speculation that Donnell could suit up as Rhodes and make a guest appearances on the back end of season 9.

Tee's involvement was made clear in the caption, so it's easy to rule his return as Dr. Choi out. Tee has already directed an episode of Med since his character left the show, and like PD's Jesse Lee Soffer, he seems content staying behind the camera.

A Med rep confirmed Donnell isn't returning

Donnell is the big question mark. The actor has been vocal about how much he enjoyed his five seasons on the show, and he even told TV Line that he could consider coming back for a cameo appearance if everything lined up:

"I loved my time on Chicago Med... If it ever came a knockin’, let’s see if the schedules work out. It’d be fun to revisit that guy."

Unfortunately, the return that fans have long waited for will be happening during season 9. TV Line confirmed that Donnell was simply paying a visit to the Med set, and is not currently signed on to make any appearances as Rhodes in the near future. A rep for the show confirmed the situation.
