Station 19 star talks 'bittersweet' end ahead of season 7 premiere

The cast is making the best out of the unexpected cancellation.

Station 19 was blindsided by the announcement that it would be cancelled after the upcoming seventh season, which means the cast members and the fans have been forced to reckon with the news at the same time. It hasn't been easy, but it's also brought everyone together in a way.

Nobody expected ABC to pull the plug on the Grey's Anatomy spin-off, and yet, here we are. Jaina Lee Ortiz recently spoke to People Magazine about the cancellation, and she did as good a job as any when asked to articulate her feelings on the show's final season:

""It came as a surprise and shock for everyone. At the end of the day, it's been such an amazing ride. Seven seasons. Wow. I didn't even dream of that. And the fact that we have the seven seasons, and we can make the last season the best yet, feels special and also bittersweet.""

Jaina Lee Ortiz admits having mixed feelings about cancellation

Ortiz, who plays Captain Andrea "Andy" Herrera, put words to the mixed emotions that most fans have had since the cancellation was made official in December 2023. It's sad to see the show go, but it is a stroke of good fortune that the showrunners and writers have a full season to play with, in order to give each character a worthwhile send-off.

Another perk about knowing Station 19 is coming to an end is that the cast members can plan accordingly, and determine which mementos they want to snag from the set ahead of time. If they though they'd be coming back in 2025, they would probably leave the set of season 7 empty-handed.

Ortiz told the outlet that she has her eyes on a specific memento once she's wrapped her final day of shooting:

""The one thing I'm going to take from the set is my helmet. It's going to say my character's last name, Herrera, and then Captain on top.""

Tough to argue with that. Station 19 has played a huge role in Ortiz's life, not only as a TV actress but as an individual. She met co-star Jay Hayden during the show's first season, and the two have been reportedly dating for two years. They recently confirmed their romance on Hayden's Instagram.

We both both Ortiz and Hayden's characters get the send-offs they deserve as Station 19 embarks on its final chapter. The seventh and final season premieres March 14 on ABC.
