The Equalizer gets renewed by CBS (No NCIS: Hawai'i, though)

CBS is being selective with the shows it's bringing back.

CBS is slowly putting the pieces in play for its next TV season. The network has been slow to roll out news regarding renewals, which has made the last few weeks particularly stressful for showrunners and fans alike. The Equalizer can rest easy, however. The thriller series has been renewed for a fifth season.

Deadline confirmed the renewal on April 25, which was evidently pushed back due to salary talks and contract negotiations with series star Queen Latifah. The renewal went through as soon as CBS and Latifah reached an agreement.

The Equalizer will get an 18 episode season (again)

“Justified” – When a note McCall receives leads her to the location of her late father’s car, she must revisit the past to uncover who was behind his carjacking and murder nearly 30 years prior, on the CBS Original series THE EQUALIZER, Sunday, May 14 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+. Amy Reisenbach, the president of CBS Entertainment, issued a statement praising The Equalizer and voicing her excitement over future episodes:

"The Equalizer, led by the incomparable Queen Latifah, has all the best elements of a powerful drama. The series is stacked with suspense, heroism, high stakes and formidable characters our audience roots for. We look forward to another season."

The Equalizer joins all three installments of the FBI franchise as shows that are produced by Universal and released through CBS. It has been a steady performer in terms of ratings throughout its run, and the network has reportedly ordered a fifth season consisting of 18 episodes.

This is the standard for the show, as it was the episode count for seasons 2 and 3. (The shortened fourth season was due to the Hollywood strikes).

Queen Latifah celebrated on Instagram

Queen Latifah voiced her joy over the renewal on Instagram. She posted a video of the Equalizer logo zooming in from the sky, along with the caption:

"Without fail, #TheEqualizer will always rise to the occasion — The occasion in question? We’re coming back this fall for Season 5 on CBS. Dreams do come true. "

Equalizer fans can rejoice, but the Deadline article that broke the news also noted that a procedural show has NOT yet been picked up CBS: NCIS: Hawai'i. The spinoff is coming up on its season 3 finale, and has reportedly been the subject of "tough business discussions" for weeks. There's even talk of the show getting a reduced season if it's brought back at all. We will keep our fingers crossed for the all the NCIS faithful out there.
