The Good Doctor canceled: Season 7 will be the show's last
The Good Doctor has been canceled. The long-running medical drama will not be renewed for another year, according to Deadline, which means the writers will have to retool the finale of the upcoming season to serve as a series finale.
Craig Erwich, the president of Disney Television Group, issued a statement to the outlet that praised the efforts of Good Doctor showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman, as well as the titular doctor, Freddie Highmore:
""Thanks to David Shore and Liz Friedman’s creative direction and anchored by Freddie Highmore’s performance, The Good Doctor has captivated audiences, who have deeply connected with Dr. Shaun Murphy and the staff at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. As we prepare to finish this beloved story, words cannot express our gratitude for the incredible cast, crew and our partners at Sony and ABC Signature for the lasting impact they’ve made.""
The Good Doctor will conclude with its 2024 season
The Good Doctor is one of several long-running dramas that have been canceled by their respective networks in recent months. CBS confirmed that Blue Bloods would be going off the air after fourteen seasons, while ABC has canceled Station 19, despite it being one of the network's most consistent draws, and an answer to NBC's Chicago Fire.
The decision to end the show, at least from a narrative standpoint, makes sense. Dr. Shaun Murphy (Highmore) became a father in season 6, and the various doctors he's worked with over the course of the show have gone on to do other things.
Dr. Marcus Andrews (Hill Harper), for example, stepped down as the president of Bonaventure hospital last season, and will not be returning. On the other hand, ABC confirmed that Jared Kalu (Choku Modu) will be returning to the show after stepping away full-time in season 2.
The final season will feature the return of an old character
Freddie Highmore, who has been nominated for a Golden Globe and a Critics' Choice Award for his performance, also released a statement on The Good Doctor's cancelation. He thanked the show's producers and the network for giving him a chance to play such a singular character:
""Playing Dr. Shaun Murphy has been an immense privilege and one of the most remarkable and rewarding experiences of my life. I will always be grateful to David, Liz, and Erin as well as the hugely talented – and lovely – cast, writers, and crew who made this show possible. Caring deeply is what got us here.""
The final season of The Good Doctor will premiere Tuesday, February 20 on ABC.
