The Rookie reveals plans to include Rookie: Feds characters in season 5

The show still has a soft spot for its spinoff characters.

The Rookie is still going strong five seasons in. The same can't be said for The Rookie: Feds. The spinoff had a lot of momentum coming out of the gate, but the Hollywood strikes complicated the renewal process. In the end, ABC wound up pulling the plug after only one season.

It was a disappointing development for both Rookie: Feds fans and the cast of the flagship series. Nathan Fillion, the star of The Rookie, was particularly bummed to see plans to expand the franchise fall by the wayside. That being said, there is some good news.

Nathan Fillion confirmed more "crossovers"

Fillion and showrunner Alexi Hawley attended Comic Con over the weekend, and they made some exciting announcements regarding the future of The Rookie. Evidently, the writers will aim to bring in characters who were introduced in The Rookie: Feds, in an effort to continue their story.

“The short answer is yes," Fillion assured the fans:

"We are trying to create a universe in which we can all exist."

The actor emphasized the show's ensemble appeal

The actor went on to discuss the importance of the ensemble within The Rookie, and how he always envisioned the show as a wide-ranging, multi-character spanning drama. "The title and the idea that it was my show was always just a trick," he posited. "“It’s always been an ensemble cast."

As far as the future of The Rookie goes, fans can expect to see more crossovers in the near future. Well, crossovers in a sense, and normal episodes, in another, since The Rookie doesn't have a spinoff show to cross over with anymore. "I’m so very pleased to be able to say this program can, at any one time, rest squarely on the shoulders of any one member of this cast," Fillion added.

Fillion and Hawley didn't specify with Rookie: Feds characters will be returning, but it's likely fans won't get to find out until the show is back on the air.
