The Rookie stars have an idea for another spinoff show (and we're in!)
The Rookie was one of the standout procedural shows to make an appearance at San Diego Comic Con. The stars were on hand to promote the upcoming season alongside showrunner Alexi Hawley.
Fans got what they expected in the form of enticing narrative clues and hints as to what season 5 will have in store, but what they didn't expect was a brand new Rookie spinoff from actresses Mekia Fox, Alyssa Diaz and Melissa O’Neil.
The Rookie stars want to focus on characters' personal lives
The trio were interviewed by TV Line over the weekend, and they suggested that they should lead a Rookie spinoff based around the fact that their characters are mothers. "It’s called Cop Moms," Cox quipped. Diaz immediately co-signed the concept, joking about which aspect of their lives would lead to the most drama. "It’s about them being moms, being cops — which one is more dangerous?!," the actress added.
It's a fun bit, but it does play into a serious desire that Alexi Hawley and series star Nathan Fillion have, which is to continue to expand the Rookie franchise. The Rookie: Feds was well liked, despite having the plug pulled on it after only one season.
Nathan Fillion wants to expand The Rookie franchise
Fillion talked about this desire during a recent interview with Collider. He reflected on the show's impact, and describes how he'd like the franchise to be remembered when all was said and done. I would hope the legacy is it turns out to be one of those classic TV shows that people always think about when they think about cop shows," he asserted.
Of course, Fillion has no plans to wrap up the show anytime soon. If anything, he wants to star on The Rookie for as long as he possibly can. "I want it to become, not iconic, but culturally embedded," the actor added. "If legacy means it has to end first, I hope our legacy doesn’t come for a while yet."
Diaz, Cox and O'Neil may not get their Cop Moms spinoff, but Diaz did confirm that the characters will get lots of screen time in The Rookie season 5. "[It will] delve into relationships a lot more," she noted. "Some bumpy roads..."
