Voight is about to get a new boss on Chicago PD (but will he be a friend or foe?)

Chicago PD is about to welcome Shawn Hatosy as the CPD's newest Deputy Chief but will be prove to be an ally or foe to Voight and the Intelligence Unit?

It seems Voight is going to have a new boss to report to when Chicago PD returns for its new season this fall.

TV Insider is reporting Animal Kingdom alum Shawn Hatosy has joined the cast of NBC’s hit crime drama in the recurring role of Deputy Chief Charlie Reid. Hatosy is set to make his debut in the season 12 premiere and it appears that his character is going to play a key role in Voight’s storyline this season.

“I think he sees a lot of himself in Voight and identifies quite a bit with Voight and Voight’s philosophy as a police officer, and they have a really interesting relationship that will evolve as the season goes on,” executive producer Gwen Sigan teased of the character.

Going off the tease from Sigan, it seems like Deputy Chief Reid might prove to be a new ally to Voight and give him a longer lease than some of the past Chiefs have. What is going to be interesting is to see how their relationship unfolds.

Given that it was teased they’ll have an “interesting relationship” and that their relationship will evolve as the season progresses, we have to wonder if perhaps Voight will be slow to trust him upfront and whether Deputy Chief Reid will end up gaining his trust as the season progresses. Or, could things perhaps start off strong early only for Voight to learn that Deputy Chief Reid isn’t who he thought he was at first?

Considering Deputy Chief Reid is said to see himself in Voight we have a hope that perhaps he might be more of an ally than past chiefs have been. However, we’ve been burned many times in the past so it’ll be interesting to see just how Hatosy’s character stacks up to past chiefs.

The one thing we have to wonder most though is just how attached we should get to the character as things haven’t exactly gone the well for many of Voight’s former bosses.

First Deputy Superintendent Katherine Brennan (Anne Heche) turned out to be a dirty cop who was arrested and found guilty of murder. Commander Ron Perry (Robert Wisdom) was killed after retiring from the CFD. Then there was Chief Patrick O'Neal (Michael Gaston), who killed himself after learning that his son, Sean, was indeed guilty of Human Sex Trafficking after he had defended him and tried to impede Voight’s investigation.

Needless to say, history hasn’t been kind to those in senior roles within the CPD so we’re curious to see what might be in store for Deputy Chief Reid and are hoping he might break the streak we’ve seen in the past!
