Chicago Med has had lots of tragic cases over the years, but few rival that of Danny Jones (Nick Marini). The character was introduced in the season 2 episode "Brother's Keeper", when he was brought into Gaffney Medical Center to receive treatment for a bowel obstruction.

Danny is found passed out on the streets of Chicago, which has Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) and Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo) puzzled. They're further confused when the former tries to touch Danny's stomach and he flinches. He's reluctant to shed light on what's wrong, and an attempt to get him to open up leads to him violently throwing up.

Danny is eventually joined by his "mother" Tina, who insists that he is fine and that he needs to be taken to a rehab facility as soon as possible. The Gaffney Medical staff is reluctant to part ways with their patient, especially when his coughing fit suggests that he doesn't want to leave, but they have no choice.

A short while later, in the episode "Alternative Medicine", Danny seeks out Dr. Reese. He confides in Reese, and asks that she help him get help, and get away from Tina, outside of the confines of the hospital. Reese does her best, and eventually discovers that Danny is being sex-trafficked by his supposed "mother."

Danny's attempts to rid himself of a tracking chip in his stomach leads to him causing a self-inflicted wound, which Reese and Charles attempt to treat. Danny refuses to speak against his pimp, however, despite being encouraged to do so by his newfound friends at Gaffney. He asks to stay with Reese, but runs away before she can make up her mind.

Unsurprisingly, Danny's journey ends in tragedy. His body is found in the episode "Free Will", and was said to have been beaten to death by Tina and his captors. A shaken-up Reese discovers that Danny originally hailed from Phoenix, Arizona and had a sister named, ironically, Sarah.

It's been a bit since Chicago Med has based a multi-episode story around a patient, but the Danny subplot remains one of the most heartbreaking and effective in the entire series. The actor who plays Danny, Nick Marini, does an excellent job, as does Oliver Platt and Rachel DePillo.

These aren't the easiest episodes to rewatch, but they serve as a reminder of what Chicago Med can be at its absolute best.
