It's been a tough stretch for Station 19 fans. It was confirmed that the firefighting drama will be ending with its upcoming seventh season, despite strong ratings and the franchise connection to Grey's Anatomy.
The seventh season will premiere March 14, 2024, and will boast a new time slot as well as brand new showrunners in the form of Zoanne Clack and Peter Paige. The outlet who confirmed the show's fate, Deadline, also revealed that the plan for Station 19 would be to rely less on its association with Grey's Anatomy when it came to storytelling.
Station 19 season 7 will be airing in a different time slot
This has led several fans to question whether they'd be getting another crossover between the two shows, or if days of seeing Station 19 and Grey's Anatomy characters teaming up are over? Well, we have some bad news and some good news.
The bad news is that there will not be as many crossovers as seasons prior. This is due to the aforementioned desire of the showrunners to have Station 19 stand on its own, as well as the fact that the upcoming season will only feature 10 episodes, which is roughly half the normal amount.
The good news is that there will still be one crossover event that happens between Station 19 and Grey's Anatomy in 2024. In a Deadline report issued before the show's cancellation was confirmed, the outlet revealed that a season 7 crossover will occur, which will mark the last time that characters from both shows will be seen on the small screen together.
Station 19 wil crossover with Grey's Anatomy in season 7
There will also be a major change with regards to scheduling. Station 19 previously served as the lead in for Grey's Anatomy, but NBC decided to switch around the time slots so that the firefighting drama will air Wednesdays at 10 pm instead of 8 pm. Grey's Anatomy will maintain its 9 pm time slot, which means that Station 19's ability to set up a story for the core franchise show is nonexistent.
Despite these setbacks and changes, Station 19 co-creator Shonda Rhimes is excited for fans to see the final season. "Grateful for an unforgettable run," she wrote on Instagram. "A heartfelt salute to the exceptional cast whose brilliance brought the characters to life and to the viewers who continued to make it possible! Thank you for the magic, the moments, and the memories. #station19."
