Donnie Wahlberg’s newest spinoff of his CBS show Blue Bloods continues to get bigger as a new casting announcement was made. Psyche actress Maggie Lawson will also be joining the series, which follows Wahlberg’s character, Danny Reagan.
For 14 seasons, Danny worked the streets of New York as a detective, working to make a name for himself while also being under the legacy of his family’s law enforcement background. Now, Boston Blue will follow him as he makes the move to Boston to work in their police department.
There, he will work with Detective Lena Silver, played by Sonequa Martin-Green. Like Reagan, she also comes from a family background in law enforcement, as per Deadline. There are plenty of similarities between the Reagans and the Silvers, with one difference between the roles of the patriarch.
In Lawson's case, she was recently announced to star as Sarah Silver, who is Lena’s stepsister and works as the Superintendent at the police department where Lena and Danny work. In addition to Lawson, we also know that another cast member will include Ernie Hudson.
Hudson will portray Reverend Peters, the patriarch of the blended family, which also includes District Attorney Mae Silver, his daughter, and who also has a grandson named Isaac. The latter also works for the police department as a rookie patrol cop. So far, these roles have not been confirmed to be cast as of this writing.
This isn’t Lawson’s first rodeo working in a cop procedural. She played a detective on USA’s Psyche for eight seasons.
Even though Boston Blue is technically described as “a universe expansion” of the original series, there is still a chance we could one day see cameos from the original characters. Actor Tom Selleck, who played Frank Reagan, was not ready to see the show end, so there is a likelihood we could get an appearance from Danny’s father in Boston Blue.
Danny's sons have not been confirmed to also be joining the series, but since Jack and Sean were both college-aged at the time Blue Bloods ended, there's a chance they may not be seen except for possible FaceTime calls. Either way, fans can look forward to following Danny's story as he makes a new home for himself in Boston.
So far, there is no news on when the show will premiere, but it is set to air in the fall in the same Friday Blue Bloods time slot at 10/9c. Fans of the show can catch up on the original series on Paramount+ before the new spinoff airs in the fall of 2025.
