Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) may not be an original Chicago Fire cast member, but she has risen dramatically in importance since making her debut in season 4. She is one of the most professional firefighters on the entire show, and she makes up one half of Fire's most important romance.
Chicago Fire showrunner Andrea Newman recently unveiled plans to delve further into Kidd's past, which made us realize just how little we know about the character and her upbringing. In the interest of getting fans up to speed, though, we've whipped up this family tree guide, so that you can know as much as possible heading into this important season 13 arc.
What happened to Stella Kidd's parents?
Stella Kidd's parents have never appeared on Chicago Fire, nor have they been named. We have never even seen a photo of them at Kidd's place. The reason? Both parents tragically died when the character was a child. Andrea Newman confirmed this crucial backstory during a June interview with TV Line.
"We established in Season 5 that her parents died when she was young," the showrunner noted. "But there is definitely more in her family story to be revealed." The only other thing we know about Kidd's parents is that they were a mixed race couple. Kidd is described as being half African American and half Caucasian on the Chicago Fire Wiki.
Who raised Stella Kidd after her parents' death?
Stella Kidd was sent to live with her aunt and uncle following her parents' untimely death. While little is know about these particular family members, we have gotten to see a photo of them amongst Kidd's personal belongings.
Chicago Fire Wiki has also confirmed the names of Kidd's aunt and uncle, which are Laverne and Ray, respectively. Andrea Newman told TV Line that Stella Kidd will be paid a visit from a family member in season 13, and our money is on it being either Laverne or Ray, given that they are already established characters within the world of the show.
Why did Stella Kidd divorce Grant Smith?
Technically a member of Stella Kidd's family, though she is not proud of it. Grant Smith (Guy Burnet) had lots of personal issues stemming from anxiety, and their marriage was effectively doomed from the start. Smith's inability to get Kidd go led to some gnarly confrontations with her current husband, Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney).
A violent encounter between Smith and Severide actually led to Kidd and Severide breaking up for a brief period in season 5. Fortunately, Kidd was able to extricate herself from Smith's life, and he has never posed any additional issues for her.
