Just as fans had already said goodbye to SWAT with its final episode of season 8, and the series altogether, news just broke that Shemar Moore is not done after all.
Fans have already been through the twists and turns of the show being cancelled and renewed multiple times, but now we have information about a new spinoff coming. Previously, the show had been cancelled by CBS at the end of season six, before it was picked back up for a final season.
However, before season seven even finished airing, it was once again renewed for season 8. Even though the show was cancelled again, CBS was not able to get a third chance at life. However, after the final episode aired, news broke that Shemar Moore would be reprising his role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrison for a spinoff titled SWAT Exiles, thanks to Sony Pictures Television.
Not only will Moore be returning to the iconic role, but the crew behind the original series will still be able to return to work in their previous posts. However, it does not look like the cast members who worked alongside Moore will be along for the ride.
Moore did say in a post that he loved his SWAT co-stars, including not only the main cast members, but also previous cast members, including Alex Russell, Lina Esco, Lou Ferrigno Jr., and Stephanie Sigman, who was in the first season.
He used a metaphor about being a quarterback to talk about how he was moving forward while still appreciating his cast mates. However, it is not known if there is a chance at least one of them will make an appearance.
Sony Pictures Television has taken over production of the series, which will consist of 10 episodes. They did not announce where it would be airing, but it was being shopped around. Lucifer’s Jason Ning will take part as showrunner while Moore joins Neal H. Moritz, James Scura, and Pavun Shetty as executive producers.
What we know about the spinoff from the logline is that Hondo had been made to go into retirement after taking part in a high-profile mission that went wrong. However, he is pulled back into the world of SWAT in order to take the lead on an experimental unit on its last legs in attempting to turn unpredictable recruits into good officers who can protect the city.
