This Chicago Med cameo has us concerned about the future of these Fire characters

We could be looking at a tragic end for a franchise firefighter.

Look, we love crossover episodes. It's a blast to see characters we wouldn't usually see in the same building interact, and work together to solve a case. But sometimes these crossovers spell out bad news for the fates of other characters. We suspect something like this might be going on with the upcoming Chicago Fire and Chicago Med crossover.

Jocelyn Hudon, the actress who plays Lizzie Novak, confirmed that her character will be appearing in the season 10 finale of Chicago Med. She didn't explain why, or what she will be doing in the finale, but her mere involvement, as a medic, has us worried about the fate of some of her Firehouse 51 peers. We know that Darren Ritter (Daniel Kyri) and Sam Carver (Jake Lockett) are going to be written out of Chicago Fire before the start of next season, and we could be looking at a situation that results in one of their deaths.

Novak's Med appearance could have dark implications

There's a precedence for One Chicago characters getting involved with Med when their lives are on the line. We saw this play out with Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) was shot in the line of duty during the One Chicago crossover in January, and subsequently rushed to Gaffney Medical Center for surgery. We even got some tense moments in which Dr. Caitlin Lenox (Sarah Ramos) had a tense exchange with Platt's IU peers.

We're not suggesting that Novak is in danger, but hospitalizing, and potentially even killing Ritter and/or Carver would make sense for Chicago Fire. Both characters are leaving at the same time, and it would be admittedly odd if they left Firehouse 51 under identical circumstances. In an effort to keep things fresh and unexpected, we may be looking at an instance in which one character is allowed to walk away and the other is tragically taken out in the line of duty.

Carver or Ritter could be rushed to the hospital

Granted, the Chicago Med finale airs before Chicago Fire on May 21, but there could be an accident that links the two episodes, or a devastating injury suffered in the penultimate episode of Fire season 13 that lays the groundwork for Novak's cameo. We want everybody to make it out of the finale safe and sound, even if they aren't returning next season.

Given how One Chicago operates, though, we have to prepare for the absolute worst. Ritter and Carver are on the chopping block, and Novak might serve as a bridge between 51 and the medical drama that will play out at Gaffney if either firefighter winds up hospitalized. Time will tell.
