We are excited to see Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) get married. These two have been through lots of starts and stops when it comes to their romance, and it feels as though they've truly deserved their happy ending at the altar. Well, happy resolution might be a better word.
The notion of an "ending" kind of ties in with out underlying concern, though. One Chicago has treated fans to multiple weddings over the years. These episodes are typically season finales or mid-season finales, and they are a celebration of their respective shows as much as they are the couples getting married.
One Chicago couples often leave after getting married

Something we've noticed over the years, though, is that One Chicago couples tend to exit the show once they've had their happily ever after. Especially recently. We saw Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) and April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) decide to leave Gaffney Medical Center after their wedding on Chicago Med. We then saw Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) move to Oregon after their ceremony on Chicago Fire.
Chicago PD is a trickier show, given that it has never gone the conventional route of basing an episode around a big wedding. The only big marriage that's occurred on the show is between Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), which happened in private and toward the end of an unrelated episode.
Still, one could argue that their marriage marked the end of the line for Upstead. Halstead left the show soon after, and Upton ultimately divorced him offscreen. The characters left a season apart, under different circumstances, but it once again marked an instance in which an established pair were no longer part of the franchise following a marriage.
We want Burzek to buck the franchise pattern

We don't want the same thing to happen to Burgess and Ruzek. These two should absolutely get married, but they are so essential to Chicago PD that their collective absence would be a disaster. Imagining PD without Halstead and Upton has been tough enough, but the show without Burgess, and Ruzek to boot? That might be a bridge too far.
There are, of course, exceptions to the One Chicago marriage pattern. Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) have remained central to Chicago Fire despite exchanging wedding vows, and similar to Burgess and Ruzek, they are in the process of adopting a child. We can only hope the latter PD couple follow in Stellaride's footsteps and remain part of the franchise well after they've exchanged "I do's."
