What's next for Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS: Origins?

Season 1 of NCIS: Origins showed Gibbs meeting his second wife, Diane, for the first time. What else could we see for Gibbs in season 2 once it premieres in the fall of 2025?

Learning about the young Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell) has been a fascinating experience for fans of the original NCIS. In NCIS: Origins, we got to see how Gibbs first became an NIS agent and how he has grown into the person we know him to be in the present day. With season 2 coming up, what else can we expect to see for Gibbs following the events of the season 1 finale?

The season 1 finale of NCIS: Origins introduced us to the young Lara Macy, who made it her mission to find out who killed Pedro Hernandez. In the end, it was discovered she knew because she overheard Gibbs having a conversation about it with Ruth, his former landlord, who became a close confidante and friend.

However, Macy decided not to go forward with testing the evidence that Gibbs provided her in the form of his weapon. Lala had come to her and claimed she helped Gibbs, hoping that Macy wouldn’t ruin her life. But this information would not become known to Gibbs after a devastating car accident put Lala’s life in danger.

Whether Lala lives or dies in the series, it will affect Gibbs. The two almost gave in to their attraction to one another when Gibbs almost kissed her. However, he admitted to leaving his gun with Macy, causing her to rush off. The same night Lala talked to Macy is also when Gibbs met his future wife, Diane Sterling, as she was the realtor who came to the house he decided to sell.

Season 2 will likely follow Gibbs as he builds a new relationship with Diane, whom we know he had a fraught relationship with down the line. She is also the ex-wife he shared with his friend Tobias Fornell.

While audiences briefly met a young Tobias in a season 1 episode when he made a brief appearance, Gibbs has not. How much they knew about one another back in the early days is something the NCIS: Origins writers could play around with.

So we could not only see Gibbs figuring out how to move on with someone else in the next season, but also see how his friendship with Fornell would soon develop. Plus, we don’t know what happens with Lala as of this writing.

There are different ways we could see how her accident eventually shapes his decision to never talk about Lala in his later years. Whether she lives and then decides to leave NIS or she dies and the pain is too great, there are a lot of ways Gibbs could struggle in the aftermath of what occurred. However, the writers decide to play out this arc, we’re looking forward to seeing what else comes for the younger Gibbs down the line.

You can catch up on Gibbs’s story in season 1 of NCIS: Origins on Paramount+ before season 2 begins.
