One Chicago specializes in keeping us on the edge of our seats. The franchise has always done a fine job of putting beloved characters in situations that test their willpower, their quick thinking, and their ability to adapt.
We saw several Chicago Fire, Med and PD characters put their lives on the line during the crossover event on January 29. There was barely time to catch one's breath due to the fact that, at any second, Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) or Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) could go down for the count.
Chicago PD's Bates will be going to prison
That is why we are here to sift through the aftermath. We are here to discuss the fates of these crucial characters, and clarify whether they are going to be coming back to the franchise. We will also delve in to characters who will not be lucky enough to return.
For starters, the aforementioned trio of main characters are fine. They all made it through their near death experiences, which is especially impressive for Platt, who was shot multiple times in the back. The Chicago PD character who will not be joining Platt and Ruzek in future episodes, though, is one Lauren Bates (Jennifer Regan).
Bates is a police officer turned security guard who worked alongside Platt and Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) when they were younger. She was working the building that was involved in the explosion during the crossover, and it was eventually revealed that she played a role in the explosion.
Cruz will return after missing the crossover event
Bates was diagnosed with mesothelioma and attempting to get what she felt was owed her by helping to stage a massive theft of data. She also brutally shot Platt in the back when the veteran officer tried to arrest one of her accomplices.
Voight confronted Bates about her involvement in the crossover's final moments. She was cuffed and taken away, ensuring we will not be seeing her again anytime soon. Stella Kidd will be returning on the Chicago Fire side of things, as will the one firefighter who was missing from all the action: Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso).
Cruz was absent because he was suspended the week before. He will be back shortly, however, as his suspension will only last two weeks. One Chicago has a tendency to kill off major characters during a premiere or finale, but we are relieved to say that everybody we know and love made it through the crossover, and will live to fight another day.
