It’s time for the One Chicago Weekend Watch, where we recommend something for the fans to binge while you wait for next week’s episodes. This week, it’s Marina Squerciati from Chicago PD in The Americans.
With so many One Chicago fans excited about Kim Burgess reigniting the Burzek ship, we’ve decided to take you back—way back, as in to the 1980’s—to showcase Marina Squerciati’s other TV romance.
In 2013, just before making her first appearance as Kim Burgess on Chicago PD, Marina appeared on the FX spy drama The Americans.
In The Americans season 1, she portrayed Irina, a former love interest of Philip Jennings (Matthew Rhys) who wound up being not so former. Sound familiar?

Irina appears in the season’s seventh episode “Duty and Honor” as a fellow KGB agent who Philip meets for an operation in New York.
But over the course of the episode, she reveals a big secret to him and the audience: they were lovers as teenagers in Russia, and he’s the father of her son.
Making things even more complicated, Philip then sleeps with Irina during the episode. And not unlike another storyline on Chicago PD, she wants him to run away with her.

Though she only appears in one episode of The Americans, Marina Squerciati’s character proves to be much more important than it looks, as Irina and Philip’s son Mischa plays a big role much later in The Americans season 4.
To say more would be spoiling the drama, but there are some similarities between this storyline and what Marina has been playing on Chicago PD. It’s a supposedly true love that didn’t work out the first time and comes back around again, though much more complicated the second time.
But it’s also just different enough to be interesting, from the fact that the show is set in a whole different time period, to watching Marina play a Russian spy. Check her out in the episode promo:
