What did Chicago PD teach us about Kevin Atwater this week? What about the rest of Intelligence? Here are our Chicago PD season 5, episode 12 takeaways.

Last night’s Chicago PD episode put the focus on an underrated member of the Intelligence Unit, but did it teach us something important about him, too?

Season 5, Episode 12 was called “Captive” and was centered around Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) after he went missing, sending the rest of the Intelligence Unit on a race to find their colleague.

If you missed any of this Chicago PD episode or just want a refresher on the events that we’re discussing, you can catch up with our “Captive” recap.

Here are our Chicago PD season 5, episode 12 takeaways:

More from One Chicago Center

1) What did we learn about Kevin Atwater?

Chicago PD teased “Captive” as revealing something about Atwater’s past, and it did: he shot a young man during a robbery. Though he was determined to have not done anything wrong, the city paid out a $20,000 settlement to the man’s father, a former drug dealer named Joe Baker (Mekhi Phifer).

This wasn’t a shocking reveal, but more something that made perfect sense with what we already knew about Atwater. He’s a physical guy (see all of the times Chicago PD has made him chase down suspects) and that sometimes involves him using force. In fact, that use of force almost got him sent to prison last season on Chicago Justice.

But that doesn’t mean he’s without compassion, especially when the victim is a young person, and a young black man on top of that. Atwater cares about where he comes from and feels responsible to be a good member of the community, so even though he had to do what he did, it still affected him profoundly. We’d expect nothing less from someone who’s been shown to have a big heart, as well as a big sense of responsibility.

2) What else is in Voight’s basement?

Midway through “Captive,” Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) is able to pull several thousand dollars out of his basement. Does anyone else wonder why he has that much money down there—and what else could be in Voight’s basement?

After all, this is Hank Voight. He’s not your ordinary middle-aged guy. He’s not storing golf clubs or Christmas lights. He could really have almost anything down there and we wouldn’t be surprised.

Maybe he’s building a boat.

3) We need more karaoke nights

Not to detract from the rest of this episode, but who else loved the scene where Platt did karaoke and was bummed that it didn’t go on long enough? We could’ve seen Upton trying to sing Sinatra. Or, you know, how about letting Antonio take a spin, since Jon Seda was in Selena, after all.

We don’t know how it would work but we are in favor of more One Chicago karaoke scenes. The franchise has a number of talented singers, including Colin Donnell (who’s been on Broadway), Monica Raymund (who’s recorded an album) and Miranda Rae Mayo (who performed in the Concert for America last year). So we don’t care how it happens, but we’d love to see that happen.
