Five years ago, Kelly Severide got a blast from his past in Chicago Fire season 1, episode 14. Look back on the episode in our February Flashback.

With Chicago Fire taking most of February off for the Winter Olympics, we’re rolling back the clock and revisiting the Chicago Fire episodes that previously aired this month.

It was five years ago today that Kelly Severide got a bit of a rude awakening, when the brother of his former fiancee turned up at Firehouse 51.

Season 1, Episode 14 was called “A Little Taste” and the gist of the episode was that Severide (Taylor Kinney) was shocked to see Eric Whaley (recurring guest star Shane McRae, making his first appearance).

That’s because Severide had once been engaged to Eric’s sister Renee, and the engagement did not end well.

More from One Chicago Center

Eric blamed Kelly for the demise of the relationship and the car accident his sister had gotten into afterward, while Kelly and Leslie Shay (Lauren German) knew the truth: Severide caught Renee in a compromising position with someone else before their wedding, and dumped her.

It felt like a little bit of Chicago Fire explaining Kelly’s now infamous womanizing: he was hurt by the one woman he tried to commit to, so now he’s just not really trying? But he had to deal with his past as the tension between Severide and Whaley drove this episode.

In retrospect it’s even a bit amusing, because Severide was engaged to the sister of a Lieutenant, while Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) would later get in trouble for sleeping with the wife of one of Chief Pridgen. Not the exact same stories, but just close enough to notice the similarity.

At least Whaley and Severide worked their issues out, because they’d end up working together in another episode later on:

The other development “A Little Taste” can be remembered for is its cliffhanger ending. Apologies if you haven’t seen it, but Chicago Fire season 1, episode 14 ends with Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) getting shot.

He lives, obviously, but again it’s a bit of a small world: he takes a bullet here, and a year later in the Chicago PD pilot, Antonio’s partner is shot and dies. That’s just rough for one of One Chicago’s favorite characters!

This episode fleshed out Kelly Severide’s backstory well, and ended on a devastating note, while Chicago Fire season 1 was barely past the halfway point. It may not have been the most action packed episode on its own but it taught us a few things that we didn’t know before and reminded us that the show would have no problem messing with any of its characters!
