Tonight Chicago Med returns for its first episode in two weeks, but what should fans expect? Is the title of the episode supposed to be foreshadowing for someone?
Season 3, Episode 9 is called “On Shaky Ground” which prompts the question of which character or characters is on the aforementioned unstable ground.
At this point in the season, there’s no shortage of candidates given the curveballs that the show has thrown in its last few episodes.
But could this be the installment where Manstead’s honeymoon period finally ends and the two have their first problem?

The official description for this episode says that Will (Nick Gehlfuss) and Natalie (Torrey DeVitto) disagree on their case of the week. Now, we’ve heard that one before—even this season—and nothing really does come of it.
Even when Will was temporarily paralyzed, they got a relatively quick resolution and were making out in his recovery room at the end of the episode.
Everything’s been pretty rosy for Manstead, leading us to wonder when Chicago Med is actually going to challenge them, and the synopsis does make it seem like this could be that time. That might even be a good thing, since we don’t want to see them just hit the same note over and over again.

But where we’re really interested in “On Shaky Ground” is its featured story, in which acclaimed actor Malcolm McDowell (Mozart in the Jungle) arrives as Dr. Ava Bekker’s (Norma Kuhling) ailing mentor.
For one, it’s Malcolm McDowell! Between casting him this year and getting Betty Buckley last season, Chicago Med has been able to land some very high-profile guest stars and that’s a great reflection of the quality of the show.
For two, we’ve been saying all season that we need to know more about Ava. The show still needs to prove to us why it decided to bring her back, and that means fleshing her out as a character and not just as part of Connor’s (Colin Donnell) storyline. Who is she, and not just in relation to him?
This is where Chicago Med season 3 needs to fill that gap. It needs to develop Ava and it needs to make us care about her as an individual. Show us there’s more to her than banter and oddly timed comments in the OR.
And let’s just hope that her mentor has a better ending than Connor’s mentor or Will’s mentor, both of whom died in this hospital. The show wouldn’t kill off a third mentor in three seasons, would it? Um, we’ll get back to you on that one.
