Three years ago, Chicago Fire cooled way, way down with Chicago Fire season 3, episode 14. Look back on the episode in our February Flashback.

With Chicago Fire taking most of February off for the Winter Olympics, we’re rolling back the clock and revisiting the Chicago Fire episodes that previously aired this month.

Three years ago today was the premiere of “Call It Paradise,” which saw the characters of Chicago Fire out in the cold. Insert all kinds of temperature puns here.

In Chicago Fire season 3, episode 14, the members of Firehouse 51 were doing everything they could to keep warm as Chicago was in the grips of a sub-zero blast that threw the city into chaos with icy roads and communication problems.

How cold was it? Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) seemed to forget his Midwestern roots and became a weather wimp, while Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) wrapped a blanket around himself to get from the car to the firehouse.

But there was still work to do, no matter what the weather. Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) and Peter Mills (Charlie Barnett) found a call and Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund) suddenly appeared with a baby in a box!

A baby had been left outside the firehouse because it was designated as a “safe haven”—a place that children can be dropped off for surrender to the social services system without any questions asked.

Dawson was in her element, caring for the baby while waiting for Child Protective Services to take over.

But while everyone else was out, a woman claiming to be the mother arrived, wanting her baby back. Red flags went off for Dawson when Toni provided obviously fake information and knew little about the baby; when she questioned the other woman further, Toni pulled a gun on Dawson. Yet the danger was brief as she fled once the rest of the house returned.

Meanwhile, Brett and Mills had been gone for a very long time, and Chicago Fire was making us worried. With 911 down because of the weather, they headed out to a warehouse after hearing of an emergency on the radio. Two teenagers were taking drugs and one of them was missing inside the warehouse.

By the time Cruz started calling to check on his colleagues, Brett had found the missing girl, and she and Mills were desperately clinging to her because she had fallen through the floor, impaled her leg on rebar and was about to plunge further to her death.

When a homeless man seeking shelter in the ambulance answered the radio call instead of Mills or Brett, Cruz knew something was terribly wrong. All of Firehouse 51 showed up on scene and they were able to save all everyone from a hard landing, not to mention the extreme cold.

Also in “Call It Paradise,” Captain Lynette Cunningham (guest star Annika Boras) took out all the stops while trying to entice Severide to become an OFI investigator, including bringing up the death of his best friend Leslie Shay. But in the end, Kelly made the decision to stay with Firehouse 51, in what wouldn’t be the last time he’d get a job offer.

Things finally heated up, at least inside, when everyone partied at a Molly’s luau in honor of Chief Boden’s father. Casey finally decided that things between him and Dawson really were over and went home with a woman he picked up at the luau—a decision he would come to regret once he’d find out more about her.

Later at home, Boden (Eamonn Walker) and his father shared a glass of whiskey and reminisced. It would be their last moments together. Boden went to check on his baby and when he came back, his father had passed away, much sooner than expected but on his own terms. You could call it a cold way to end a Chicago Fire episode.
