Monday is Chicago Fire star Jesse Spencer’s birthday, so we’re paying tribute by looking at the reasons why we love him and his character Matthew Casey.

Today we’re saying happy birthday to Chicago Fire‘s own Jesse Spencer, who continues to hold Firehouse 51 in one piece as now Captain Matthew Casey.

Time and again Casey has proven himself to be the steadiest member of the firehouse. He’s been the shoulder to lean on for any number of people over five and a half seasons.

He’s served his community in not one but two ways, acting not only as a firefighter but also having a now-concluded career in Chicago city politics.

And when everything else seems to be falling apart, Casey’s always there to help put everything back together.

It’s hard to imagine Chicago Fire without Matthew Casey. He’s one-half of the show’s central friendship (with Kelly Severide) and one-half of its primary romantic relationship (with Gabriela Dawson). And now, after his promotion, he’s the second highest ranking officer at the firehouse.

Beyond that, Casey’s as calm and stable as they come. Rarely do we see him make a truly reckless decision (except for that fling with Chief Pridgen’s ex-wife Beth, played by Bree Williamson).

He loves his wife Dawson completely, backs his team when they need him, and goes out of his way to help everyone he can—whether it’s an old friend like Jason Kannell or one of his constituents. Without Matthew Casey, Firehouse 51 would be a lot more chaotic and a lot less grounded.

And there’s no denying that Jesse Spencer was a perfect choice to play Matthew Casey. When Chicago Fire started, Jesse was probably the most easily recognizable, having come off a starring role as Dr. Robert Chase in FOX’s House. But he’s always felt like just part of the team, in the very best way.

Though Casey is a natural leader and gets to give a lot of the orders, Jesse Spencer makes him feel like he’s a team player who just happens to be in charge. At the same time, he’s also got the confidence for those times when Matt has to lay down the law—without making him come off as a jerk while he’s doing it.

He can play both sides of the character, and he works so well with everyone, no matter who you put him in a scene with.

Jesse Spencer makes Casey feel like someone you’d trust in any situation, but also someone that you can relate to and want to hang out with. He’s charming, empathetic, and has a real knack for doing more with less. Sometimes just a look on his face is enough to sell a scene. Chicago Fire is lucky to have him, and One Chicago wouldn’t be the same without him.
