Five years ago, Chicago Fire gave Dawson and Casey family trouble in Chicago Fire season 1, episode 15. Look back on the episode in our February Flashback.

With Chicago Fire taking most of February off for the Winter Olympics, we’re rolling back the clock and revisiting the Chicago Fire episodes that previously aired this month.

Five years ago today came “Nazdarovya,” the uniquely named episode that caused headaches for both Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund).

Plus, Chicago Fire season 1, episode 15 gave us Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) having to come face to face with his former fiancee, and not liking what he saw.

So in essence, everyone’s personal lives were terrible.

For Casey, this episode was about continuing to deal with his mother Nancy (guest star and Academy Award nominee Kathleen Quinlan, who also played Michael Scofield’s mom in Prison Break).

The tension between the two came to a head here, with Nancy finally revealing why she killed Casey’s father in the same argument where Matt told her to get out of his place.

Meanwhile, Dawson was busy trying to save his future brother-in-law, because Antonio (guest star Jon Seda) was not only recovering from being shot at, but also being investigated by the Chicago Police Department. With Antonio in no condition to do anything about it, the onus fell on Gabby to clear her brother’s name.

That forced her to call on a source that we wouldn’t think twice about now: Hank Voight (Jason Beghe), who gave Dawson a lead that saved the day. Did that make up for how he’d terrorized Casey earlier in the season? We’ll let you decide.

This episode of Chicago Fire also revealed what happened to Severide’s ex-fiancee Renee after the car accident. At the request of her brother Eric (Shane McRae), Kelly tracked down the woman he almost married only to discover that she’d become a stripper and no longer wanted anything to do with him.

It got worse: this Chicago Fire season 1 installment ended, in part, with Eric telling Severide that after his visit, Renee had intentionally overdosed on pills and had been admitted to the hospital. Watching “Nazdarovya” you can almost understand why Severide can’t seem to settle down with anyone after that. But hey, at least he wasn’t alone in having personal troubles.
