Last year, Chicago Fire’s firehouse family began to break up in Chicago Fire season 5, episode 13. Look back at the episode in our February Flashback.

With Chicago Fire taking most of February off for the Winter Olympics, we’re rolling back the clock and revisiting the Chicago Fire episodes that previously aired this month.

It was a year ago today that NBC premiered “Trading In Scuttlebutt” which will forever be known as the episode where we found out Firehouse 51 was breaking up.

Not voluntarily, of course—but because someone up the Chicago Fire Department food chain had a bone to pick with Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker).

And to get back at Boden, Deputy Chief Anderson (guest star Michael Hanrahan) decided to break up the band.

More from One Chicago Center

“Trading In Scuttlebutt” kicked off with Boden overruling Anderson at the scene of an accident, thus saving the lives of several firefighters.

But Anderson did not take kindly to what he perceived as a blatant show of disrespect by Boden, especially once news of what happened spread all around, and from then on he was doing everything he could to jam up the Chief.

Eamonn Walker was in fine form this episode, as Boden tried not to take Anderson’s slings and arrows personally but also stood his ground against a boss who was more like a drunken bully.

“Trading In Scuttlebutt” was also the episode where Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) left Chicago for Springfield on a day trip while he contemplated moving there permanently.

This was where Chicago Fire fans realized Severanna was definitely going to be a thing for the rest of Chicago Fire season 5. The show wasn’t going to leave the story with Anna getting better after Severide helped save her life; no, he was going to track her down and try to make a go of an actual romance with her. Depending on whether or not you liked the pairing, you probably either liked or hated this episode.

But as you’ll see in the video above, “Trading In Scuttlebutt” was the episode where Anna (guest star Charlotte Sullivan) laid down the law with Kelly and told him not to upend his life for her. By the end of the episode, Anderson was likewise laying down the law with Firehouse 51 as he had most of our heroes reassigned. Last year gave us one bumpy ride indeed.
