One year ago Chicago Med faced a blizzard and broke our hearts in Chicago Med season 2, episode 14. Look back on the episode in our February Flashback.

With Chicago Med taking most of February off for the Winter Olympics, we’re rolling back the clock and revisiting the Chicago Med episodes that previously aired this month.

Last year this was the day that Chicago Med premiered “Cold Front” and sent our heroes into the middle of a terrible Chicago blizzard.

“Cold Front” was an outstanding episode for Brian Tee, as Dr. Ethan Choi was right in the middle of the action, and wound up being put through the wringer as a result.

Choi rescued a badly burned man from a wrecked car and brought him back to the hospital, being his champion every step of the way.

He put up a fight when Dr. Isidore Latham (returning guest star Ato Essandoh) told him that the man was not worth saving.

Latham was technically right, of course, but medicine is not just about being technically right. Choi fought to keep the man alive as long as possible, because he wanted to give him a chance to say goodbye to his wife before he died.

But of course, in typical One Chicago fashion, the man passed away just minutes before his upset spouse walked into the ED, leaving Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) to break the terrible news to her and us to weep as we realized how close she’d been to getting that last, valued moment with the man she loved.

Speaking of Dr. Latham, “Cold Front” also featured an important storyline as Latham and Rhodes were drafted to run triage during the chaotic night, and butted heads repeatedly because of that fact that Latham was looking at patients with complete detachment.

It seemed terribly insensitive, but as the episode wore on, Connor (and we) came to understand that Latham had to make the most difficult of decisions—literally deciding who to save and who to let die—and his autism helped him do that without the emotional baggage that Choi was going through.

He was making the toughest of calls not because he didn’t care, but because someone had to do it and he was the best person to be doing it. Latham taking that huge responsibility on his shoulders was an example of how someone’s disability can also be their biggest strength, and you don’t see that positive portrayal often.

“Cold Front” wasn’t just an entertaining episode of Chicago Med; it showed how the series was moving outside of the storytelling box, and that coupled with outstanding performances from all involved made it the best Chicago Med season 2 had to offer.
