Three years ago, Chicago PD put Kim Burgess to the test in Chicago PD season 2, episode 15. Look back on the episode in our February Flashback.

With Chicago PD taking most of February off for the Winter Olympics, we’re rolling back the clock and revisiting the Chicago PD episodes that previously aired this month.

It was three years ago today that “What Do You Do” premiered and gave Officers Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Sean Roman (Brian Geraghty) the shift from hell.

Burgess and Roman found themselves in the right place at the right time to make a major black market smuggling bust, but unfortunately they made the wrong decision and were forced to fight for their lives in this tense episode.

After Burgess noticed a man carrying what she thought might be a gun across the street from a convenience store they were in, she and Roman pursued the suspects without calling for backup, against Roman’s better instincts.

Before they could react, Roman had a gun pointed at his head, the gunman had seized their weapons and phones and pulled Roman into the building. While a panicked Burgess pounded on the door, shots rang out.

Inexplicably, instead of running back to the convenience store and calling for help, Burgess chose to enter to find a badly injured, unconscious Roman and they both were taken hostage. From that point on, it was up to Burgess to keep them alive and she rose to the challenge.

She fought off attack after attack, kept her cool and de-escalated the situation repeatedly. But Chicago PD season 2 kept challenging her.

Back at the station, the Intelligence Unit “enjoyed” taser recertification, mandatory for everyone but Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas) who hung out in Voight’s office enjoying some lunch and trading war stories.

Those included a quick reference from Voight to one of his darker moments when he harassed a Chicago firefighter—namely, Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) in his original appearances over on Chicago Fire. Nice bit of continuity there, Chicago PD.

While everyone else enjoyed tasing each other—including Halstead, never mind that he’d been tortured with a taser in Chicago PD season 1—Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) got worried when he couldn’t contact Burgess.

Ruzek went to Voight with his suspicions, and the unit showed up just in time to rescue Burgess and Roman. Although Roman chose to focus on everything that Burgess had done right and
let everyone know she had saved his life, Burgess was overcome with guilt over the “million things I should have done differently.”

Back at the district, she got compliments from her commander and applause from her peers. But in the locker room after, a badly shaken, bruised Burgess broke down in Ruzek’s arms, finally able to let her guard down. “What Do You Do” pushed her to the limit, and Chicago PD season 2 hinted at just how tough Kim Burgess was.

But you’ve got to feel bad for Roman, because this wouldn’t be the first time he’d get roughed up, as another shooting paved the way for his exit after Chicago PD season 4.
