February flashback: Chicago PD season 4, episode 15
One year ago Chicago PD broke our hearts with an undercover plot in Chicago PD season 4, episode 15. Look back on the episode in our February Flashback.
With Chicago PD taking most of February off for the Winter Olympics, we’re rolling back the clock and revisiting the Chicago PD episodes that previously aired this month.
It was a year ago today that we first saw “Favor, Affection, Malice or Ill Will” which took the cake as the One Chicago episode with the biggest mouthful of a title.
But Chicago PD season 4, episode 15 was also one of the best episodes of the season, thanks to a great performance from Elias Koteas as Alvin Olinsky.
Olinsky took center stage in this episode once Intelligence got a tip that a grieving father wanted to hire a hitman, so that he could kill the man he believed had murdered his daughter.

That’s an understandable (albeit still very illegal) reaction, so the idea was pitched to send Olinsky undercover as the hitman, in order to stop Dad from doing anything he’d regret while the team worked to reopen the daughter’s case.
It was an incredible episode for Koteas, because Olinsky could certainly understand the man’s pain as a father himself, and as someone who’s had his own fair share of cynicism too.
And in retrospect it’s even more painful, because we didn’t know it at the time, but just a week later Alvin would lose his own daughter Michelle, when she was one of the many victims from a massive warehouse fire as part of the three-hour Chicago Crossover.

“Favor, Affection, Malice or Ill Will” struggled in some other areas, like Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) getting busted down to patrol for leaving the unit, only to be back upstairs before we knew it. And it was sad that it was the final episode for Nick Wechsler as Kenny Rixton, after we’d really come to like the guy.
But really, this was Alvin Olinsky’s episode. It was one of Elias Koteas’s best performances as he not only tried to help this father who was clearly broken, but also fought for him with Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and State’s Attorney Mark Jefferies (Carl Weathers, visiting from Chicago Justice). It was truly crushing to see how the case ended.
This episode feels a bit overlooked since it was the one before the huge three-part event, and as it wasn’t a huge game changer, but it’s one of our Chicago PD season 4 favorites because it’s a great watch from an acting standpoint. Rewatch the key moment below and you’ll understand:
