Four years ago Chicago PD had its first Law & Order: SVU crossover in Chicago PD season 1, episode 6. Look back on the episode in our February Flashback.

With Chicago PD taking most of February off for the Winter Olympics, we’re rolling back the clock and revisiting the Chicago PD episodes that previously aired this month.

It was four years ago today that “Conventions” premiered, and Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) reached out to detectives from Dick Wolf‘s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit to help the Intelligence Unit stop a vicious serial rapist and murderer before he attacked in Chicago again.

Detectives Amanda Rollins (guest star Kelli Giddish) and Odafin “Fin” Tutuola (guest star Ice-T) arrived in Chicago, and received a snarky welcome from Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) or “that battle axe downstairs,” as Fin called her.

Then they got right to work, handing Intelligence an important clue to finding the Riverwalk Killer: the only commonality surrounding the crimes was that the same trade show was happening in both New York and Chicago at the time of the murders.

That information was enough to quickly narrow in on one suspect who’d been at both conventions: Jeffrey Baker (guest star Brandon Dahlquist).

But while Baker tried to smarm and smirk his way out of Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush)’s interrogation, there was another attack.

Yet this time, the victim survived and gave the combined team the key to breaking the case. Vanessa Yeats (guest star Agneeta Thacker) had remembered her self defense training and fought back against the brutal assault, injuring the assailant’s eye during the struggle.

When Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) learned that the perpetrator had an eye injury, she followed her always keen instincts and started her own side investigation.

Burgess called all the pharmacies in the area, asking about anyone who’d bought items to treat an eye injury and bingo, she found another suspect who also had credit card payments linking him to both conventions.

She had come through again in finding Neil Vance (guest star Cliff Chamberlain) and Voight was suitably impressed, telling her, “You’re going places, kid.”

As Voight renewed the interrogation of Baker in classic over-the-line Voight style (at one point threatening to cut his ear off as he’d done to the victims), Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) had Baker’s hotel staked out.

When Vance came in asking for Baker’s room, they called it in and then gave chase, cornering Vance in a park. When Vance realized Baker had given him up, he grabbed a hostage and things escalated, but the team arrived just in time for Olinsky to take Vance out with a sniper shot:

Although the team wrapped up the major case efficiently in “Conventions,” the personal lives of Voight, Lindsay and Halstead weren’t going quite so smoothly. Voight’s son Justin (recurring guest star Josh Segarra) was having a great deal of difficulty adjusting to life outside of prison and Voight was increasingly worried about him and his secretiveness.

Meanwhile, Lindsay was facing her high school reunion. Although she dreaded going, it did provide the opportunity for some of her backstory to be revealed to Halstead, bringing them closer to becoming Linstead in the process.

After once again deciding against giving in to their desires and Jay leaving Erin’s apartment, a knock on her door led everyone to believe Halstead had changed his mind and this would be their big moment. But Chicago PD season 1, episode 6 had one last surprise for us.

When Erin opened her door, she found a distraught and breathless Justin Voight, who stumbled into the apartment with his hands covered in blood. Voight’s concerns about his son were not unfounded, and now they were Lindsay’s problems, too. Talk about a shocking way to end an episode and a crossover!
