Chicago Fire season 6, episode 12 takeaways: The F Is For
Did Chicago Fire take it easy on Kelly Severide? Is there anyone better than Matthew Casey? Here’s what we learned from Chicago Fire season 6, episode 12.
Chicago Fire returned on Thursday with plenty of drama for Casey and Severide, but most of it had nothing to do with their unplanned dive into the river.
Season 6, Episode 12 was called “The F Is For” and told fans that while Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) survived jumping off the roof, that was just the start of his problems. Severide finally told Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) that he didn’t want her to move out, but he might have been too late.
If you missed any of this Chicago Fire episode or just want a refresher on the events that we’re discussing, you can catch up with our “The F Is For” recap.

1) Severide had it easy
So Severide jumped off a roof into the river, got knocked out, and…well, that was kind of it.
“The F Is For” had him checked out (off-screen) for a concussion, and in another scene he says that he has passed the concussion protocol, so we can imply that he must have had one.
But it didn’t seem to be a very serious one, because even coming back from the hospital, he was laughing with Stella and telling her he was “fine.”
Concussions are no small injury, and it wouldn’t have harmed Chicago Fire if it had let Severide have one a bit more severe; he could easily have been written as back in action next week. Especially with most of his scenes being not physical in nature, the cliffhanger would have felt more impactful if he’d shown any serious side effects from it.
But at least he’s alive and maybe this was a wake-up call, at least?

2) Casey is pretty much the best guy ever
Not that we needed any more reasons to love Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), but “The F Is For” gave him permanent Good Guy status when he risked his own life to save a photographer whom we all hated after he tried to sneak shower photos of Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund).
The cool thing about that scene is that for fans, there was never any doubt that Casey would do it. The show has established that he’s that kind of guy, and Chicago Fire season 6 has only reinforced that with Casey finally getting some public recognition for his actions. He may not have been glad about it, but he’s not the person who’d leave someone in need.
Between that and coming to Dawson’s defense in the first place, and having the restraint not to deck this jerk on not one but two occasions, Matthew Casey is a great guy and a lot better than a lot of us might be under the same circumstances.
3) Herrmann shouldn’t coach anything
Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) as a life coach was a bad idea from the start, so Chicago Fire didn’t shock us when his advice turned out to make things a lot worse. It kind of reminded us of that episode of FOX’s Bob’s Burgers where Linda Belcher thought she was psychic but just got people in trouble. Kudos to Eigenberg for playing both the funny and not so funny beats of this, but Herrmann shouldn’t be allowed to coach anything ever again. Not even his kids’ sports teams.
