Brian Tee’s birthday: Why we love Chicago Med’s Ethan Choi
Chicago Med star Brian Tee celebrates a birthday on Thursday, so we’re looking at all the reasons we love his Chicago Med character, Dr. Ethan Choi.
Today we’re saying happy birthday to Chicago Med‘s own Brian Tee, who portrays the ED’s most unflappable doctor, Dr. Ethan Choi.
Choi has established himself as the rock of Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. He keeps a cool head in seemingly every situation.
It feels like even if the Emergency Department were on fire, Choi would not only remain calm but be able to tell the rest of us what to do.
And he loves pandas, so really, what’s not to love about the guy?

But seriously now, Choi has gotten better and better as a character while Chicago Med goes on. When he was given the extra responsibility of being the Chief Resident last season, it was like a switch was flipped and the show figured out how great a character he was.
He has taken responsibility on his shoulders not only officially as a doctor, but unofficially when it comes to taking care of both patients and his fellow doctors. Choi isn’t afraid to speak up when something needs to be said, or to tell somebody that they screwed up.
And it was Choi who came to Dr. Sarah Reese’s (Rachel DiPillo) defense after she pepper sprayed a patient this season, reminding everyone that the incident ultimately led to the patient’s diagnosis and thus basically saved his life.
He’s just an all-around solid doctor and solid human being.

But that doesn’t mean Choi is an emotionless robot either. He just doesn’t show his vulnerable side. Chicago Med has done a fine job using Choi’s unique perspective for any number of great moments, whether it was him privately grieving Jason Wheeler’s suicide or talking with Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) about the darkness of human nature:
And in these quiet moments, Brian Tee is even better. He’s wonderful when it comes to expressing these more complex ideas not just about a patient getting better or worse, but about what it’s like to deal with life and death, or just pondering the bigger picture of human existence. He makes us all think a little more.
And while all of the other characters have moments where they can frustrate us sometimes, Brian always carries Choi with such poise and dignity. Even when he’s wrong, you can never really be all that mad at him, because he expresses his points calmly, clearly and fairly. We always get where he’s coming from.
We’ll be learning more about Ethan Choi in Chicago Med season 3, now that his sister is coming to Chicago, but that just makes us more interested to see how Brian Tee will deepen the character. In the spotlight or out of it, he’s always a pleasure to watch and we’re happy he’s part of our Chicago family!
