Is Chicago PD trying to pitch us a Voight and Olinsky breakup? Is Upton getting better? Here are our Chicago PD season 5, episode 17 takeaways.

Last night’s Chicago PD tried to turn Alvin Olinsky against Hank Voight, so are we about to see a long-running partnership bite the dust? Or is the show just faking us out again?

Season 5, Episode 17 was called “Breaking Point” and told two parallel stories about loyalty. As Intelligence tried to convince a man to turn on his murdering cousin, Olinsky (Elias Koteas) found himself pressured to sell out Voight (Jason Beghe). Only one of those things happened.

If you missed any of this Chicago PD episode or just want a refresher on the events that we’re discussing, you can catch up with our “Breaking Point” recap.

Here are our Chicago PD season 5, episode 17 takeaways:

More from One Chicago Center

1) Upton’s getting with the program

Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) has had to adjust to how Intelligence does work since joining the team on a full-time basis, but “Breaking Point” was another reminder that she’s now comfortable with coloring outside the lines.

When a diner owner conveniently “forgot” the man who’d used his pay phone to threaten a now-dead Alderman, Upton pretended she’d seen a rat and told him she’d call the Health Department unless he got his memory back.

Needless to say, the ploy worked and Upton got a big clue, although not the real killer.

The most interesting concept with Upton joining Chicago PD as a regular character has been the contrast between her formerly straight-laced ways and the less well-defined methods of the team, and “Breaking Point” continued to bring her over to Intelligence’s way of thinking.

2) Voight and Olinsky are like an old married couple

Particularly with the episode’s ambiguous ending, Chicago PD wants us to think that it’s breaking up the band. After hearing Voight tell a suspect that being loyal was “stupid,” Olinsky appeared to have a change of heart, leaving without answering Voight’s question about what his own breaking point would be.

Voight and Olinsky go way, way back before the show even started, and so many scenes in the episode were either with the two of them together or featuring one or the other. It reminded us how much history they have and how close they’ve always been. Not to mention the way they can talk to each other, being completely blunt.

But are they headed for a proverbial divorce? Let’s not get too worried. This episode definitely tried to plant that idea, but Chicago PD also wanted us to think Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) sold Voight out in “Snitch” too. It wouldn’t be the first time the show has faked left and gone right.

3) Chicago snow is entertaining

Ending this week’s takeaways on a shallow note, did anyone else really have fun with the snow that was all over this episode? Chicago winters are legendary and “Breaking Point” made good use of the atmosphere, whether it was all those shots of snowy streets or the fact that our heroes plowed through a lot of powder during the episode’s big car chase. Kudos to Chicago PD for not just being in the cold, but putting it to use! (And to the cast and crew who had to work in that weather!)
