Ato Essandoh is heading from the operating room to the courtroom, as the Chicago Med veteran has landed a major role in the CBS legal pilot The Code.

One of One Chicago’s best and brightest has landed a new gig, as Ato Essandoh has joined the cast of the CBS legal drama The Code, per Deadline.

The actor, who recurs on Chicago Med as Dr. Isidore Latham, will portray Major Trey Ferry in the series that mixes military drama and legal drama. Ferry is both an active-duty member of the U.S. Marine Corps and a lawyer at Quantico.

He joins Anna Wood (Falling Water), Phillipa Soo (Hamilton), and Dave Annable (Brothers & Sisters) in the project from creator Craig Sweeny, who was behind CBS’s TV adaptation of Limitless.

What does his casting mean for Latham’s future on Chicago Med?

It’s too early to call. For one, for any scheduling conflict to even exist, The Code has to be picked up to series by CBS. Right now, the program just has a pilot order.

Even if the series gets picked up, it’s entirely possible that Ato Essandoh could remain on both shows. He’s appeared in Chicago Med season 3 this year while he also had a role in the Netflix show Altered Carbon.

But there is potential for an issue, similar to how Latham’s role in Chicago Med was reduced this season due to Essandoh being unavailable because of the Altered Carbon shoot.

He’s still appeared in a handful of episodes, but usually only for a scene or two while the focus in the cardiothoracic surgery department has shifted to Dr. Ava Bekker (new series regular Norma Kuhling).

Yet at the same time, that’s precisely why this could work out in everyone’s favor. As much as Chicago Med fans would love more of Dr. Isidore Latham, because he’s shifted to more of a boss role and less of the foil to Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell), Med may have an easier time with working around The Code and thus be able to find a way to keep him.

Whatever happens to Latham, there’s no doubt that this is fantastic news for Ato Essandoh. He has been a shining star since he first joined the One Chicago family, and he should have gotten an Emmy Award nomination last season.

But between his casting in Altered Carbon and now his role in The Code, it’s clear that more people are taking notice of his remarkable talent. He’s been a great actor for a long time, but now he’s got more of a spotlight, and the bottom line is that it’s wonderful he’s getting the major opportunities he so richly deserves.
