Will Chicago PD finally reveal Hailey Upton’s undercover past? Look ahead to tonight’s episode with our Chicago PD season 5, episode 18 preview.

This week’s Chicago PD is poised to be the episode that answers at least one of fans’ queries about newcomer Hailey Upton—but will it? And will we like the answer?

Season 5, Episode 8 is called “Ghosts” and that immediately lets you know that this episode is going to be digging into something from the past, and that it won’t be good. Because ghosts haunt after all.

In this case, the past belongs to Upton (Tracy Spiridakos). This episode purports to tell us what was up with that undercover operation that she mentioned in Chicago PD season 5, but naturally couldn’t talk about.

Naturally, ever since then we’ve wanted the show to talk about it, because you don’t introduce a plot point like that and never go back to it.

What will be interesting to watch for is just how much Chicago PD reveals about Upton with this episode. Just because the episode is supposed to focus on her, doesn’t mean that we’ll get a lot of usable information.

An example of that is the Chicago Med episode “On Shaky Ground” which gave us a story about Dr. Ava Bekker’s (Norma Kuhling) mentor coming to the hospital, but wound up showing us almost nothing new about her character.

So just because the premise is centered around Upton, doesn’t mean Chicago PD is going to give us any meaningful reveals about Upton. If it doesn’t, though, it’s a huge missed opportunity because this episode is also set up pretty much perfectly.

Not only does “Ghosts” have a premise we all want to know about, it has a fantastic guest star in Titus Welliver. You can learn more about him here, but he’s one of those great actors who’s been in so many wonderful shows and been brilliant in all of them.

(It’s a little ironic that he’s here right now when his ‘day job’ is playing an LAPD cop on Amazon’s Bosch.)

Welliver should play excellently off Tracy Spiridakos, who has herself turned in great work when the scripts have given her more to do. The last time she was the star in “Fallen” it was the best performance of the week. So we’ve got a killer combination here, pun not intended.

The third thing to watch for in “Ghosts” is Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer). We saw Upton stand by Jay through all the crap that he went through with Camila and his PTSD; how will he react when it is her who’s got problems?

Upton was loyal to Jay but also drew a line when he self-destructed; we’ll have to see if he supports her, but is also willing to call her out if she goes too far in her pursuit of Welliver’s character—which, this being Chicago PD, she probably will. This whole show is about going too far.

So “Ghosts” could be very telling for the Halstead-Upton partnership. How does Jay see her now compared to how he saw her in that season premiere episode “Reform” when he didn’t want to let her in? Will he stand by her like a true partner? Will he learn something that changes the way he thinks of her? Will we? There are so many juicy questions in this episode, and there’s no reason we can’t get quite a few answers.
