How will Chicago Med cope in lockdown? Why are we excited about it? Look ahead to tonight’s episode with our Chicago Med season 3, episode 14 preview.

This week’s Chicago Med is so big, it’s locking down the entire hospital. And we can’t wait to see what happens, because this could be one of the most fun episodes of the season.

Hospital lockdowns have been done on TV before. Chicago Fire star Jesse Spencer was part of one in the House season 6 episode “Lockdown.”

You’ve also seen some variation of the idea, in which the main characters are somehow confined to the hospital or a part of the hospital, on a number of other medical dramas over the years. And when it’s done right, it can be really exciting to watch.

With “Lock It Down,” all the potential is there for Chicago Med to have some fun with its heroes, even if that’s all we get out of it.

Firstly, the concept of Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) using Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) and Dr. Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo) to look for a missing baby is an interesting choice.

If we have anyone on this show even remotely close to a Sherlock Holmes type, it’s Dr. Charles. So it makes sense, in a strange way, that Goodwin would ask him to solve the crime—since it doesn’t look like the cops are called before the lockdown happens.

That could be a great opportunity for Oliver Platt and Rachel DiPillo to chew some scenery. And as anyone who’s watched The West Wing knows, Oliver Platt is great at chewing scenery.

But the fun shouldn’t stop there. “Lock It Down” has us particularly excited for Dr. Connor Rhodes, because Colin Donnell told us in our recent interview that he gets to spend this episode playing an action hero of sorts.

We think Colin Donnell would be a great action hero. Watching him channel his inner Jack Bauer is going to be fantastically fun, if Chicago Med gives him scenes that allow him to do that, like having to break into the ventilation system or take in a door or all of that exciting stuff.

Besides, after the mood Connor was in last week, he can burn off some of that anger by muscling his way into the operating room. Too bad Ato Essandoh isn’t credited for this episode, because we think Connor and Dr. Latham would make a great action duo (but who’d be the sidekick?)

Chicago Med has always been at its best when it does something different and breaks out of the mold of other TV medical dramas. (One word: panda.) “Lock It Down” has all the pieces to be one of those different episodes if the writing is present.

It doesn’t sound like it’s going to change Chicago Med season 3 in any big way, but sometimes you just need an episode that’s a good time, and we’re expecting that this one will be a good time.
