Chicago Med season 3, episode 14 takeaways: Lock It Down
Did Chicago Med just blow up Manstead for no reason? Is Connor a secret action hero? Here are our Chicago Med season 3, episode 14 takeaways.
Last night’s Chicago Med was an unconventional episode, and with doing things differently comes a lot of questions about what we just saw!
Thursday’s episode was called “Lock It Down” and featured the search for a missing baby after an abduction within the hospital. The resulting lockdown forced many of our doctors and nurses to do a lot of improvisation to help their other patients, while looking for the child before it was too late. Some fared better than others.
If you missed any of this Chicago Med episode or just want a refresher on the events that we’re discussing, you can catch up with our “Lock It Down” recap.

1) Connor and Choi get all the interesting cases
We don’t see them work together often, but when Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) and Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) get together, it’s always a whole lot of fun. Last season, it was a panda; this season Connor is literally breaking into the hospital to help Choi with a heart procedure.
If that’s what happens when these two collaborate, we need more of this.
Connor deserves bonus points for getting his inner action hero on this week. Colin Donnell would not have been out of place in an episode of The X-Files or 24, with his wandering around with a flashlight and then shouldering his way through a Pathology door.
We’re unashamed Dr. Connor Rhodes fans over here, but he managed to impress even us this week with how he didn’t stop at anything—which also made up for how he was a bit of a jerk last week.
Now too bad we didn’t have Patti Murin on hand, because a great outtake would be Dr. Nina Shore asking Connor what he did to her door.

2) Has Natalie finally gone too far?
Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) is known for being opinionated, and for pushing her opinions forward under almost any circumstance. But “Lock It Down” took Natalie’s righteousness to a new level.
The original plot was typical Natalie—ignoring everything to do what she thought was right for her patient, regardless of the consequences. But the way Chicago Med handled the reaction was a real head-scratcher. Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) tried to take the blame, and then Natalie went off on him for doing so.
Let’s be clear here: if Natalie had stopped at saying Will was trying to protect her because she’s his girlfriend, she would have had a valid point. He’s absolutely been doing that; what other reason is there for how he hasn’t disciplined her for her other questionable moments this season?
But the script took a hard right turn when she said he wouldn’t do the same for Choi or Noah Sexton because they’re men, and then another when she continued to talk about how she’s not taken seriously and needed a break from their relationship.
That makes it an issue not about Will and Natalie, but an accusation of sexism; she’s saying Will would treat a male doctor differently. And shouldn’t she know Will better than that? Where is all this coming from, period?
This seems like creating Manstead drama for the sake of drama, because it doesn’t feel like Will or Natalie. Let’s hope Manstead doesn’t go the way of Brettonio on Chicago Fire.
3) What is this dad storyline doing to Reese?
Are any other Chicago Med fans over the Reese’s dad story already? Aside from Dad being a total waste of space in Reese’s (Rachel DiPillo) life, now “Lock It Down” has her thinking she’s like her father. Now he’s not only a problem but he’s causing her to tear herself down. And we’re not okay with that.
The idea of meeting one of Reese’s parents was interesting in theory, because she was one of the main characters whose parents we haven’t met and we had high hopes he might not be a pain in her behind (seriously, don’t get us started on Connor’s dad and his behavior in this episode).
But Reese’s dad has turned out to be no better than a lot of the other parents in One Chicago, and he’s almost worse because while our other characters like Connor brush off their parents’ drama, Reese is taking it to heart. Let’s hope this ends quickly and Dad gets the boot back out of Reese’s life, because she deserves better.
