Our One Chicago Performer of the Week for the week of April 17 is Chicago PD star Jason Beghe for his work in the episode Saved.

It’s time to name another One Chicago Performer of the Week, and the star who impressed us the most this past week was Chicago PD‘s own Jason Beghe.

Though Hank Voight had one of the worst weeks of any character in the One Chicago franchise, it did at least result in a very entertaining performance from Jason.

In “Saved” another piece of Voight’s past came back into his life, but not in the way fans thought; a young woman named Hannah who had been taught by his late wife Camille turned up looking for his help.

Voight and the Intelligence Unit soon uncovered that she was part of a bank robbery crew, thanks to her criminal boyfriend.

The script allowed Jason Beghe to show us every side of Hank Voight, including ones that we don’t see enough of.

Yes, there was the usual rough and tumble Voight, as he was not shy about getting physical with the other member of the robbery crew until he gave up what he knew about Hannah and Mike. (Poor Trent.)

But we also saw a more uncomfortable Voight, because he struggled with the idea that Hannah was involved in the robberies at all—and that she could be a willing participant.

Even over the objection of Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda), he continued to insist that she was just a kidnap victim, or that she had to have been forced, since why would she have asked for help otherwise?

He never got to hear from Hannah herself, because Mike dragged her outside while pointing his gun at the rest of the team, and both of them were shot to death—giving us the really sad scene where Voight was cradling her body and telling her he was sorry.

We don’t get to see enough of Voight’s vulnerable side, in part because he’s a character who does keep up that emotional wall, and in part because Chicago PD doesn’t write it as much. The heart of the show is Hank Voight being a one-man army—so we tend to see that more than anything. So to see this was refreshing, and Jason Beghe wrung the emotion out of it.

We also saw some great scenes as Voight and Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas) continued to be cagey with one another, sharing drinks while both knowing they’re in some serious trouble and there’s nothing they can do to stop it.

This Chicago PD episode was elevated by Jason Beghe’s work in it; though Voight had a terrible day and didn’t come out looking great either, Beghe’s ability to chew the scenery and his perfect amount of sadness made it worth watching.
