Chicago Med season 3, episode 17 preview: The Parent Trap
Will Chicago Med break more hearts this week or patch them up? Look ahead to tonight’s episode with our Chicago Med season 3, episode 17 preview.
This week’s Chicago Med episode features some rocky relationships, so we’re wondering if they will keep going down those rough roads—or could they reconcile?
Tuesday’s episode is called “The Parent Trap” and we know from the official description provided by NBC that it has Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) working with her…
Well, we don’t know what Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) is to Natalie anymore, after he got drunk and made out with another woman.
Natalie was understandably angry when she found out about that, and when we last saw her, she was walking out on Will.

So what’s their relationship status in this episode—and how difficult will that make it for them to work together?
Both Will and Natalie are professionals, so you’d like to think that they can leave their personal “break” (or whatever it is now) aside and do their jobs.
But it’s not a reach to think that Chicago Med will use their case in “The Parent Trap” to either resolve their personal issues, or to bring them into the hospital and create additional drama for Manstead. Or both, as we’ve seen it go down both ways in One Chicago history.
So this episode could either reunite the couple after they get some perspective—or push them further apart.

The other, more prominent issue in “The Parent Trap” is the fate of Dr. Sarah Reese’s (Rachel DiPillo) father Robert Haywood (returning guest star Michel Gill). NBC’s promos all want us to think that he’s not going to make it through this episode, like this sneak peek clip below:
Firstly, it’s harsh—though not undeserved—for NBC to describe Reese’s dad as “a psychopath.” It is what Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) has been trying to say for weeks, and what fans have been feeling as well. Good on the show for bluntly calling a spade, a spade.
But what effect will this have on Reese? Assuming that Chicago Med takes that route and her dad dies, the woman is barely put back together from her bout of PTSD after Charles’ shooting. This is the same character who tried to buy a gun and wound up macing a patient earlier this season! It could be utter disaster.
Yet we’re really hoping that “The Parent Trap” doesn’t choose the even more obvious option and have Reese suddenly reconcile with her father. He’s done so much to her, from walking out on her as a child to just expecting her to care for him as an adult, that to have them make peace and it all be okay would feel hollow. She should use her newfound backbone to put him in his place. She can be sympathetic to his medical plight without allowing him to emotionally manipulate her further.
Likewise, if Will and Natalie just make up by the end of this episode, that’d be tying things up too neatly, as well. Chicago Med has some big choices to make tonight, yet we’ll see if it makes it all better or allows things to get a little messy. Do we need a happy ending, or not?
