How much will Chicago Fire shake up Kelly Severide’s life? Look ahead to tonight’s episode with our Chicago Fire season 6, episode 21 preview.

The promos for this week’s Chicago Fire are focused on Kelly Severide’s love life, but what should fans really be watching for?

Thursday’s installment is called “The Unrivaled Standard” and NBC‘s promos are devoted solely to the return of Severide’s (Taylor Kinney) ex-girlfriend after a several-year absence.

But Chicago Fire fans will know that promos don’t always represent the truth of an episode. There was the promo that wanted to convince us Matthew Casey was dead, and the others that tried to sell us on Jake Cordova being a serious threat to Dawsey.

So when it comes to the re-emergence of Renee Royce (Sarah Shahi), there are two possibilities.

More from One Chicago Center

One is that Chicago Fire creates more romantic drama for the sake of romantic drama, and Renee actually does come between Severide and Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo)—whether it’s because she tries or because Stella is further insecure.

After all, this will be happening just two episodes after she reacted badly to his short-lived Vegas marriage, so it stands to reason Stella might feel even worse about a woman Severide almost left the country for.

As frustrating as it would be for Stellaride fans, the show does like to throw the occasional wrench in for fun.

The other option is what we just saw with Cordova, which is that the promo buzz turns out to be much ado about nothing. Yes, Severide had feelings for Renee, but those were years ago—and before she lied to him about the paternity of her child (who has so far not been mentioned, by the way).

But let’s not forget that Chicago Fire isn’t all about relationships. There’s still problems to solve, and since this is the last episode before the season finale, there will be a big one:

The heart of “The Unrivaled Standard” should be in the issue that’s in front of our heroines on Ambulance 61. What’s going to happen to Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund) and Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer)? How will the team react to an immediate threat to two of their own? We’re not going to have another cliffhanger with the paramedics in it, right?

There’s a good chance Severide will have a headache by the end of tonight’s Chicago Fire, but that is just one piece of the puzzle. Firehouse 51 still has a lot of work to do, and hopefully the episode will balance both aspects.
