Chicago PD has set up an explosive end to Chicago PD season 5, so what will happen? Here are our predictions for the Chicago PD season finale.

After Chicago PD left us hanging with Wednesday’s cliffhanger, we’re busy thinking about what will go down in next week’s season finale.

It certainly looks bleak for Hank Voight and his Intelligence Unit. Alvin Olinsky is facing charges for a murder he didn’t commit, and that’s if he survives the precarious state that this week’s episode left him in.

Meanwhile, Denny Woods has the upper hand in his season-long vendetta against Voight, and the rest of the team just seems to be trapped in a holding pattern in the middle. But they’ll inevitably be collateral damage if something happens to their boss.

So how is this going to work out? We’ve put together three predictions for the season finale. Check them out below, then don’t miss the final episode of season 5 on May 9.

More from One Chicago Center

1) Voight will take the fall

There’s no clearer way for the season to end than Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) getting what’s coming to him. Whether it’s in handcuffs or somehow leaving another way, he’s not going to finish the season in charge of Intelligence.

The season finale needs a big moment to end on. All One Chicago finales have had them. Voight leaving would be as big as it gets. Plus, the show has been on this path for the entire season. Voight has been trying to outrun Woods, and Woods has been doing all he can to trip up Voight. And then in the last episode it just all goes away? It wouldn’t make sense. Voight has to take a fall of some kind in this conclusion.

Now, keep in mind that this doesn’t have to be a permanent move. As we’ve seen in all the other big cliffhangers this One Chicago season, he could easily be back at his job at the start of season 6 after some time jump (presuming NBC orders season 6). But season 5 won’t end well for Voight.

2) Olinsky will survive

Things looked bleak for Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas) when “Allegiance” ended with him stabbed in prison multiple times. But we’re not worried about his fate; we expect that he will pull through.

Unless Elias Koteas has decided that he wants to leave Chicago PD, there’s no good reason to kill Olinsky. He’s one of only two characters left now, following the departure of Erin Lindsay, who has a history with Voight. And he’s the only one who can play that angle regularly; Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) has been reduced to just wandering in for a scene or two since she was nearly blown up in the 100th episode.

Voight needs Olinsky to lean on and to have his back. And Chicago PD needs Olinsky to explore the “old guard” of the unit; everyone else in Intelligence is younger and doesn’t have the same way of looking at the world. Not to mention, ending the season with his death would be a terrible ending to a season that’s kicked a lot of people when they’re down. It would seem to run counter to the inherent optimism of the whole One Chicago franchise.

3) Someone else will make a power move

The season finale has to have someone else from the Intelligence Unit step up. For the last few weeks, it’s felt like Chicago PD has been Voight and Olinsky vs. Woods and everybody else is kind of just stuck in the middle. But when Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) dared to challenge Voight this week, that felt like a tipping point.

Someone will step up and do something to protect the rest of the team, because if Voight and/or Olinsky go down, the rest of Intelligence is in trouble, too. Their future depends on what happens now. Somebody has to realize that—and our money is on Antonio, who’s not intimidated by his boss and who has the savvy that has come from his extensive experience and from being the lead investigator on Chicago Justice. He knows how the big picture works and he has to see what’s coming.
