1) It’s One Chicago’s most relevant show

When NBC cancelled Chicago Justice last year, it also removed the One Chicago franchise’s most timely series. It took off the board a show that was incredibly relevant to where society is right now and the issues we face as a country. If it gets rid of Chicago PD, you’re going to kiss most of the franchise’s relevance goodbye.

Chicago Fire and Chicago Med will be able to find ways to include certain topics in their cases of the week, but they don’t have the storytelling framework to address them like Chicago PD does. The broader scope of a police show allows for a wider variety of stories than a firefighter drama or a medical drama. Episodes like “Anthem” are easier done on PD than trying to tie them to a fire or a health crisis.

Setting the logistics aside, the police are a huge part of our national conversation right now. We have people debating police reform, police brutality, and we’re unfortunately seeing terrible events that we’re questioning the police response to. Chicago PD is the series that can talk about those concerns, especially given the Intelligence Unit’s own questionable methods that would make it suited to any number of important discussions.

If NBC wants to keep the One Chicago franchise relevant, and wants it to be something that stands out, then it needs to make Chicago PD season 6. Because Chicago PD season 5 was just the tip of the iceberg.
