Casey and Dawson, Chicago Fire

RELATIONSHIP STATUS: ROCKY, PRESUMED OVER

Status update: Did anyone see Chicago Fire‘s flagship pairing—indeed, the biggest relationship of the entire One Chicago fandom—going down in flames this season? We didn’t, but that’s exactly what happened, as Dawsey appear to be headed for either death or a divorce.

Things seemed to be going so much better for Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund) at the start of Chicago Fire season 6. Casey not only survived the cliffhanger from the end of last season, but he found himself promoted to Captain. Dawson was continuing to be the most badass paramedic in Chicago. Plus, they finally had gotten Dawson’s father Ramon (Daniel Zacapa) out of their place.

But things changed and they changed very quickly. By the end of the season, Casey and Dawson had agreed to try for a family again, but disagreed on how after Dawson discovered that she had an aneurysm that might put her own life at risk if she became pregnant. She wanted to proceed anyway; Casey wanted to adopt instead. Just like that, their happiness ended.

The final straw for Dawson was when she learned that Casey had gone to check out an adoption agency—ironically meeting with a woman whose last name was Dawsey—without her. Chicago Fire season 6 ended with her asking about a job in Puerto Rico.

All of this felt terribly severe, but it made sense after the fact when it came out that Monica Raymund’s contract expired at the end of the season and she wasn’t expected to return. Less than a week later, she made it official that she’s not coming back. Since Jesse Spencer’s still on the show, it seems like Dawsey has to be over in some shape or form to explain why Casey’s not going to be working with his wife anymore—ever.
