Chicago Fire’s Kara Killmer celebrates her birthday
Chicago Fire star Kara Killmer celebrates her birthday on Thursday, so we’re celebrating her Chicago Fire character Sylvie Brett.
Today we’re saying happy birthday to Chicago Fire‘s own Kara Killmer, the actress who portrays paramedic Sylvie Brett.
To say that Brett’s life has been a roller coaster over the last year might be an understatement. It has been a constant state of ups and downs, heartbreak and awkwardness, and her world is wide open right now.
In Chicago Fire season 6 alone, Brett got back together with Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda), and that storyline alone was more than enough drama for one person.
They reunited, then Brett dumped him, then they got back together, and now they appear to be off for the forseeable future—but not before she thought that she was pregnant with his baby. Brett wasn’t expecting, but she was certainly startled.

Outside of that, Brett had to deal with the disaster that was her childhood friend Hope Jacquinot (guest star Eloise Mumford).
What was supposed to be a fun catch-up between two old friends turned into Hope developing a crush on one of Brett’s co-workers, and being revealed as a schemer. That was something Brett took personally, even though Hope’s actions were not her fault.
Oh, and remember the episode where Chicago Fire had Sylvie go on a date with a doctor who turned out to be married?
So it definitely hasn’t been a great year for her, but Kara Killmer has soldiered on through all of that.

Sylvie Brett is an endearing character for sure, with her big personality and equally big heart, but she presents some challenges, too. Namely, how the show continues to break said heart and pull her in all these different directions. Consider how she was left in the finale:
But through all that, Kara Killmer has been fantastic. She never lets Brett’s light get extinguished, even when her character would have every right to just throw up her hands and be cynical. And it really comes from her—it’s Kara Killmer’s energy and her spirit that fuels Brett. You can’t fake her enthusiasm, the obvious love for what she does, which comes through in how much Sylvie cares about what she does.
While this latest season has been a pain in the behind for her, we’re excited for what the future holds for Brett and for Kara Killmer. Chicago Fire season 7 will put Sylvie Brett firmly in charge of Ambulance 61, and she might not be ready for that, which is another piece of drama for her.
But it also is another challenge she can rise to, and we’re curious to see how she does it. Because she’s a light in the firehouse, just like Kara Killmer is a light in the One Chicago fandom. Now she’s poised to shine even brighter.
