Look back at where Chicago Med began this summer. Read our retrospective on the sixth episode as we rewatch Chicago Med season 1, episode 6.

Over the One Chicago summer break, we’re looking back at where it all began by rewatching the first seasons of our shows—and today we’re revisiting Chicago Med season 1, episode 6.

If you want to rewatch this episode along with us, you can find Chicago Med season 1 on iTunes and DVD.

Episode six is called “Bound,” and will always be remembered first and foremost for being the episode where Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) delivers her baby.

The introduction of Owen Manning into the One Chicago world is a milestone, of course, but also kind of amusing when you rewatch this episode, given that the show forgot about him through most of the second season and he only popped up twice in the third. But hey, he’s a cute baby!

In other family news, “Bound” also features the return of Cornelius Rhodes (D.W. Moffett) when he writes the check for the hospital’s new psychiatric ward—the same ward his son’s girlfriend would be checked into the following season.

Cornelius is still annoying as ever, but this is the episode where Chicago Med teases the idea that he may have contributed to his wife’s suicide. At least, that’s what Connor (Colin Donnell) thinks, and we have no reason to think otherwise.

Still, the specific truth remains a mystery in One Chicago canon to this day, and it’s probably better that way. As much as you wonder who’s really right, it’s not worth re-opening that wound for another plotline. Given where Connor is now, it wouldn’t add anything to his story arc except more grief.

Then there’s Dr. Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo), who’s working with Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) again, and it’s not good news either:

Overall, when you watch it a second time, “Bound” is a pretty depressing episode and the only thing that offsets that is Natalie having her baby. But between that, the revelation about Connor’s mom, and a pretty interesting case of the week about two illegal immigrants who risked their lives to hide on an airplane, it’s also important for Chicago Med, because there’s a lot going on here.

At this point, we’re a third of the way through Chicago Med season 1, and some of the characters are starting to define themselves. Natalie’s had Owen, setting her up with stories about being a single mom and getting over his father’s death.

Connor’s family issues are now well-documented between this and “Fallback.” Other characters still need more definition, but we’re seeing where these characters are going and we want to go with them.
