Chicago Fire’s Monica Raymund celebrates her birthday today, so we’re celebrating her and her Chicago Fire character Gabriela Dawson.

Today we’re saying happy birthday to Chicago Fire star Monica Raymund, who played tough as nails paramedic Gabriela Dawson for the show’s first six seasons.

We’re still not over the fact that she chose to leave the series just a few months ago, and that’s because she’s left an undeniable impact not only on her show, but on the entire franchise.

From the very first episode, it was clear that Monica Raymund was the female lead of Chicago Fire and that also made her the first lady of the whole One Chicago universe.

As Gabriela Dawson, she was the first female lead character and still one of the most prominent on any of the series.

Dawson, and her relationship with and marriage to Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), was always a major part of Chicago Fire.

Whether it was Dawson leaving Ambulance 61 to become a firefighter, or Dawson trying to become a mother, or any one of her memorable rescue efforts, she had some of the highest-profile storylines.

Monica Raymund handled all of them with aplomb. Whether or not Dawson was your favorite character, you could appreciate how she took everything that was thrown at her—which was a lot—and made it work.

Even if it didn’t quite make sense, or if it didn’t feel like Dawson, she did something with it. And not only did she have her own storylines, but she was part of building stories for other characters, too.

We saw storylines with Dawson’s brother Antonio (Jon Seda), her father Ramon (Daniel Zacapa) and of course, Dawson’s memorable but different relationships with both her partners (played by Lauren German and Kara Killmer respectively). Chicago Fire leaned a lot on Monica Raymund, and she responded.

As we look back on her past year, she had big moments to the very end. Dawson had the chance to change her career path (and didn’t), helped her partner deal with a potential pregnancy (that wasn’t), and was determined to try for another pregnancy of her own (even at possible risk to her own health). Whether or not she knew that it would be her last season on the show, Monica had a strong year in Chicago Fire season 6.
