Chicago Med actor Ato Essandoh is celebrating his birthday today, so we’re celebrating him and his Chicago Med character, Dr. Isidore Latham.

Today we’re saying happy birthday to Chicago Med‘s own Ato Essandoh, who has stolen our hearts as Dr. Isidore Latham, head of the cardiothoracic surgery department.

Latham was introduced last season as Dr. Connor Rhodes’ (Colin Donnell) new boss, but he was quickly developed into a lot more than that.

With his own unique story and his different way of looking at the world, Latham is as interesting as any of Chicago Med‘s main characters even though he’s only a recurring cast member.

And the performance Ato Essandoh gave throughout the second season was worthy of an Emmy Award, even though he didn’t get nominated.

What makes Isidore Latham such a great character is largely attributed to the person playing him. Ato has fleshed him out far beyond what’s on the page.

He’s one of the most well-developed supporting players on the show, and he’s definitely not the typical boss character.

Ato Essandoh makes us want to know more about Latham, and not just Latham in relation to Connor or Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling).

Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see a lot of Latham in Chicago Med season 3, between the latest season’s emphasis on Ava and Ato being off filming his Netflix series Altered Carbon. According to our interview with producers, that limited his availability to step into Latham’s lab coat during the third season.

And we don’t know how much of him we’ll get in season 4, now that he’s been cast as a regular in the upcoming CBS drama The Code. Learn more about his new project here.

But we’re hopeful that he’ll have time to check back into the hospital, and whether he does or isn’t able to, we’ll always appreciate Ato Essandoh for creating one of One Chicago’s most unique and most interesting characters. He’s an outstanding actor, and he had some important and also very moving storylines.

He is one of Chicago Med‘s biggest assets, and we’re grateful for every scene he’s ever in. Happy birthday, Ato!
